I am sooo excited yet scared. My surgery date is
May 1 - I have known about it for two weeks and I
have just finished my last minute shopping. I have
made plans for my son as he is still in school and my
husband is finishing up some last minute work so that he
will be able to take some time off to help me.

My physician stated he has never seen a case be
approved by the insurance company so quickly. LOL I
submitted my pre-authorization to my insurance company and
it was approved before my doctor ever sent his
letter.

I am so happy that everything has gone smoothly for at least one person. That
is wonderful news and May 1 is here! I look forward to hearing all the details.

I just thought I would put in my insurance story
here, even though it has been over a year and a half
since my surgery. I chose my surgeon, and had my
initial consultation back in ‘98. Then his staff
submitted all my paperwork to the insurance company. The
insurance stalled and stalled, kept asking for more
information etc, then they finally replied that WLS was
excluded in my policy, so there was no way they were going
to approve me. Well, I could have appealed their
decision, but at that same time, my husband had a good job
offer from another employer. We decided to take the new
job, and take our chances on the new insurance being
better than the old. The new insurance was CIGNA PPO of
Michigan. I had to provide proof of prior coverage, so they
wouldn’t exclude my "Pre-existing" conditions. Then, I
found out that my chosen surgeon was out-of-network for
CIGNA PPO. But, by then I had been dealing with my
surgeon for several months, so I didn’t want to change.
CIGNA approved me relatively quickly. Then, it had been
more than six months since my initial consultation
with the surgeon, so he wanted me to come back for
another one. I did that, grudgingly, because the surgeon
was over 3 hours away, and I had already heard his
whole presentation before, but that was what had to be
done. Then, I had to have a psych evaluation from a
psychologist to get clearance for surgery. The eval was easy,
but it took a while to get an appointment, and a
couple more weeks after the appointment for the psych to
send the paperwork to the surgeon. FINALLY, ten months
after my initial consult with the surgeon, I was
cleared for surgery, and scheduled my surgery date. I had
to go in one week before surgery for my pre-op
tests, which all came out fine. I ended up paying $3000
out-of-pocket, since my surgeon was out-of-network for my
insurance. $3000 was the yearly maximum allowed by my
insurance policy, so after that was paid, the insurance
covered everything else %100. My doctor and hospital did
not require any payments upfront, although they did
warn me that I would be paying $3000. They also
offered a payment plan if I needed to make monthly
payments on my portion of the bill. I had some problems
with nausea and vomiting after surgery, and had to
make a visit to the emergency room one night, and
CIGNA paid for that too. They also paid most of the
cost of my blood tests which I have had every three
months since surgery. These blood tests can be over $500
each time, so that is important. (It helps that the
lab which does my tests is part of the CIGNA
network.) I hope this helps someone who is going through
the insurance battle right now. You can check out my
surgery story on my web

NALC gave the ok for my surgery. I have a date for September 5th. I am so
excited that I don’t know what to do first. Dr. Martinez will be in Vegas on
Saturday so I’ll meet him and some of his staff. My husband is off from work
that week so he can come with me and be helpful (I hope). It seems like the
pieces are falling into place just like they are supposed to. The last time
that I had this plan to have surgery everything went wrong. I didn’t give up, I
just took another direction and this time all is going smooth. YEEEEEHAAAA!

Thanks Carolyn,
My 21 year old son is at home and he helps me a lot. I have a few friends
that I can call on if I need to so that part is taken care of for me. It sure
would be nice to have my mom around to help. She always did in the past. God
rest her soul.
I have been looking at these protein drinks in Smith’s. The cost is not as
bad as I thought but this might not be what I’m supposed to have. The nurse
said that she would send me the exact itenarary and list of diet and any special
foods that I need to have when I get home. Kevin dear that he is is planning
the trip and making reservations as I write. Thank God for him(the husband) he
is always at his best in a pinch. Maureen
