New member waiting for insurance approva
i! I’m Terri, awaiting insurance approval for
the gastric bypass. You all sound so supportive and
wonderful to talk to! Do you have any suggestions on how to
physically prepare for this surgery, like take extra
vitamins, learn to play the saxophone or take a picture of
my feet so that I will recognize them when I can
bend over to see them.(I need to keep my sense of
humor because inside I’m shaking like jello).<br>thanks
for any suggestions!!!

he major concern I have is not being able to
absorb enough nutrients. I have read a lot of info and
if you do not get enough vitamins and nutrients, you
can lose a lot of muscle. The heart is a muscle. This
scares me. How do we digest these vitamins? I have read
that people cannot take them right away. Can we grind
them? Will they digest? We all know with this surgery
we are not getting everything we eat. I guess that
is why they call it a bypass. I have heard to take
zinc for hair loss, definately Iron (probably moreso
for women), b-12, 2 multivitamins a day. I do not do
this now. I will have to b/c I do not want to get
sick. I do not know about you guys but everyone and
anyone is trying to talk me out of this. Some of the
concerns I understand like potential future problems with
organs. I need to hear positive comments. Those are a few
of my major concerns. Anyone with advice, let us
know.

irst off, you WILL have to take multi-vitamins
but think of it this way. You take your B-12 pill in
the morning along with a multi-vitamin. OK, big deal,
you are done until you go to bed at night. Before you
go to bed…you take another b-12 pill. Your done
with your pill taking for the day. Does that sound too
hard to accomplish? Besides….fat/obese people are
wonderful storing machines. You will get all the nutrients
you need whether you think you will or not. As far as
hair loss. You DO NOT lose all your hair. You are not
going to be bald. Your hair thins…that is all. It
would be the same thing if you had any type of
surgery…it happens because of the large does of anesthesia
(sp) that they give you and of course, because of the
weight loss. But, don’t think for a minute you are going
to look like a cancer patient on chemo. I was told
if you are really concerned about hair loss to take
Brewer’s Yeast tablets. They smell horrid but they are
suppose to help. I never took them. I lost some of my
hair but I didn’t find it too upsetting at all. About
the vitamins…..I was taking the vitamins from the
first day I came home from the hospital, plus about a
dozen other pills. Your stomach does not have any
trouble digesting these pills. It is the food that is the
problem, that is why you have to stick with a liquid diet
until your stomach heals sufficiently to handle
different foods. I have talked to people that have had this
surgery…some up to 17 years…and they are still having
positive results. Only you can decide if this surgery is
right for you. I shut out all forms of outside
negativity. I knew if I started listening I wouldn’t go
through with it. I just knew I couldn’t live my life as a
fat person one more day or face one more diet
failure. Take a deep breath and list the pros and
cons…then make up your mind. Also, as long as you start
exercising slow and then work your way up to daily walks you
will maintain muscle and lose the fat. You make it
sound like you are going to become a little rubbish
heap…that is very far from the truth. Please write
again….and I hope others post too. Keep you chin
up…..eveything is going to turn out just fine for you. Helen
