am also a nurse besides a patient. This was my
first major surgery also, except 4 children. When I
went into surgery they gave me medication to put me to
sleep and that is when they put the vent tube in, so
you don’t notice it going in, and what I remeber
after ward is feeling something in my throat and when I
woke they pulled it out and just kept saying breath
deep. As for the pain I was hooked up to a morphine
pump and administered my own pain medication, so that
way you can adjust it for each indivial. I’ll be
plane the first day of surgery was the worst for pain,
until you get the hang of the pump. I had surgery at
7:30am and back in my room by 1:00pm, by 6:00pm I was
able to manage my pain with the pump. You don’t have
to worry about getting to much because there is a

set dose the machine will allow to be administered.
You may want to ask your doctor about it, it will
help a lot. Yes I am doing better taking liquids,
starting today WED. I have been able to tolorate liquids
with out any problems. I guess it just took longer
than I thought it would to drink without any problem.
I hope this info helps you, if there is anything
else I can help with let me know. I’m sure you will
suprise your family after the baby is born. About 10 days
after surgery I had no problem traveling. I still take
some pain med now and then because of the tube in my
stomach gives me some pain, the doctor says that is
normal because it is a forgien object to the body,so
until I get my staples out Friday, 19th, and the tube
will come out then. I suprise myself every time I get
on the scale and I’m sure you will suprise yourself
also. Just keep thinking possitive. God

hanks for the words of encouragement, I need to
hear many of them right now. Never having had any
major surgries before I have no idea what to expect and
if I can manage pain, etc…I feel like such a big
baby sometimes! I suppose it can’t be any worse than
childbirth, right? (I’ve had 3 babies with no problems!) I’ve
heard some scarey stories about the vent. tube down the
throat and that scares the heck out of me! I know a
person has to keep a positive attitude through out all
of this and I don’t know how "positive" I’m going to
be when I’m in a lot of pain!
If you don’t mind
me asking…how is your tolerance for the liquids
going now? From your first entry it sounded as though
you were having some problems? I hope things are
going more smoothly for you. Oh, and congrats on the

weight loss, WOW! I am hoping to be on my way to
"thin-ville" before August as my daughter is expecting her
first baby then and I want to be well enough to travel
home to help her with the baby! I also sort of have a
secret desire to go home and surprise everyone with my
weight loss! *smile* I know it probably won’t be much,
but anything is an improvement!

endy, it’s natural to be nervous as the time of
your surgery gets closer. I just had surgery on March
4, 1999 and the last 4-5 days before the surgery I
was extremely nervous, but if your like me I wanted
to be sure that I knew everything I needed to know
and what to expect. As each day goes by I am more
glad that I had the procedure done. I started keeping
a journal before I went to the hospial beginning
with the first time we approached the insurance co.
They turned me down the first time but my doctor
resubmitted it and it was approved. By keeping a journal you
are able to put your concerns in writing and look at
them and almost answer them yourself another day. It
has been 13 days post surgery and I have lost 36
pounds, it surprised me. I’m sure you will do fine, I

would like to help you through this as much as I can
any questions feel free to ask, and I’ll do my best
