When having surgery.

don’t know if anyone knows this information, I am having surgery on 3-31-99. A
friend of mine told me that I can’t have nail polish on during the surgery.
Thanks, Kim

i Kim, just a brief response to your comment
about the nail polish. The recovery room staff look at
your finger nails and check that your getting enough
oxegyn. One of the first signs of someone not getting
enough oxegyn into their blood stream is a blue-ish tint
on your nails, thus the need for you not to have
nail polish on.
Just having minor surgery recently
(not WLS, still waiting on insurance approval for
that) I found out that specific reason for the "no nail
polish" requirement.
Best of luck with you up coming
surgery date! I bet you are full of all sorts of emotions
and excitement right about now! Take care, Wendy

endy,

Thanks for the info, off goes the
nails, (Tee,hee). YES I am full of emotions and
excitement. I am worried that I forgot something or haven’t
asked enought questions.
I guess that is
normal.
This site has been great, a BIG thanks to Helen for
all her kind and very good advice.
How long have
you been waiting to hear from the insurance? I wish
you luck, please keep us posted.

Take
care,

Kim

i Kim, I just wanted to add, if you have
artifical nail tips that its okay to leave them on. You’ll
just need to make sure that they have no polish on
them. I’ve only had artifical nail once in my life
(daughter’s wedding) and swore I would never go through that
again, *lol*…it took over 4 months for my real nails
to grow back after I took the artifical ones
off…ouch!
In regards to your question of how long I’ve been
waiting for insurance, only about 1 1/2 weeks but I am
not a patient person and it seems like a month
already.*lol*….
Are you having a RNY or another procedure
done, if you don’t mind me asking? I’m hoping to have
the RNY done soon. My daughter is expecting her first
baby in August (has had 2 prev. miscarriages over the
past 3 years) and I want to be well enough and well

adjusted to my new life style enough to be there for her.
We live almost 800 miles apart so I need to learn
how to eat out, etc. during my stay there.
I agree
with you 100% about Helen, she has been a wonderful
person putting up with and answering all my questions.
She is a wealth of information and such a positive
role model!
So now, 9 days and counting Kim? Please
keep us all posted! Best of luck and God
bless.
Wendy

went in the day before surgery for a manicure
and pedicure…wanted to look my best :-) Anyway,
they just took off the polish on one finger on each
hand and foot…so, bring the polish with you and have
a friend or someone re-polish the clean nails! Just
a thought!
Kelly

5. Neva Marjory Says:

es I am having RNY, I understand the
waiting.
SO is this your first grand child? "WOW" maybe you
can have the surgery, within the next month. By
August from what I have hear, and read you would be
feeling great. Thank you for your words take care, Kim

reat Idea! Thanks

im, this is my 3rd grandchild. My son and his
wife Andrea have 2 boys,Ryan is 3yrs and Zachary is 7
months. They live in Germany so I don’t see them much
(except in the pictures they send me). I was blessed to
be present when Ryan was born, my first grandchild!
This will be my daughter’s first child, she has had 2
previous miscarriages, both different causes. She is
starting her 5th month of pregnancy and feels much more at
ease now.(so do I)….
My husband and I wanted to
have our children when we were both very young (18 &
19 yrs old). We thought it would be great to still
be young enough to enjoy our kids when they grew up
and started families of there own. Little did I know
how difficult it would become just to do the simplest
of daily chores because of my being so overweight. I

now know if I don’t do something drastic like WLS I
will never see these beautiful grand babies grow up. I
want them to know me and their grandfather!
As far
as the surgery for me goes, the clinic said to be
realistic about the insurance and any delays, so if I’m
really lucky, maybe by the end of April or first part of
May I’ll have the surgery out of the way (I can only
pray!)So I guess I have a long time to ponder and worry
about the surgery! (I am so terrified about the pain
after the surgery…I’m such a big weenie!)
Well,
enough of my babbling! Thanks Kim, you’re in my prayers!
Wendy

8. Neva Marjory Says:

hanks Wendy, I understand the waiting I got the
okay 2nd week in Feburay, and I am having the surgery
in eight days. So I have had about six weeks of
pondering, my mind has been to a lot of places, mostly good.
I am glad to hear your daughter is doing
well.

Take care,
Kim

I just wanted to thank all of you for your
informative posts. I am just starting the process toward
surgery, and I come here everyday to see if there are any
new posts. I have also read each and every old post.
Anyway keep posting to let us know how you are doing!
Some of the info is scary, but, thats what this is all
about, information! I am so glad you are all doing well,
most of you anyway, sorry Keetlaney. From all the
posts I’ve read, it sounds like it will get better.
Thanks guys!

Thank you for your answers about gum. I think I
better give it up because with my luck I would swallow
it. Next dumb ? is can you sleep in a waterbed and
how soon after surgery?? thanks for putting up with
me. love, Barbie

11. Neva Marjory Says:

Barbie……When I went for my PAT yesterday the
specifically addressed this issue. You can sleep in one if you
want but…..they said it is very hard to get yourself
out of it if you have to go to the bathroom or
whatever when you need to get up. It will hurt your
incision more trying to get up even on the waveless ones
so they recommended if you have a waterbed to get a
regular one for a couple weeks.

Cynthia
Pre-Op

12. Neva Marjory Says:

Cynthia, Thank you for the answer about the
waterbed. Your time is drawing short too!!!
I can’t
believe just 6 more days the time has flown for me. My
family is going to the lake with some friends today.
Like always I had to think
of an excuse not to go.
I hate that, but I don’t want to embarrass my
family. I don’t expect this surgery to be a miracle. but
I hope I will be able to go and do things without
being self conscious. 6 more days to go!!!!! Barbie

13. Neva Marjory Says:

Dear Barbie:

I have slept in a waterbed
for almost 20 years now. The first week after surgery
found me sleeping in a recliner, however. I tried a
regular bed….thought it would give me more support.
WRONG….I was so uncomfortable I thought I would die. You
have to make sure you can get UP out of the waterbed.
That is the real problem. As far as comfort, it is
wonderful. Just put pillows here and there. If you have
trouble getting up out of the waterbed now….just
imagine doing it after stomach surgery. Very painful to
strain. Gauge your own recovery and return to the
waterbed when you feel you can get up and out without too
much trouble.

Helen

14. Neva Marjory Says:

Thanks, Helen, I know as soon as I can I will
want back in my waterbed. I remember after last
c-section I couldn’t wait to get baCK TO MY BED. I was
afraid after this operation I would have to give it up
like gum!!! Now I feel better. less than 6 days now!!!
Thanks again, Barbie

15. Neva Marjory Says:

Hi guys, thanks for the info, checking into it now, wish me luck!!

16. Neva Marjory Says:

Thanks for all of the encouragement, guys. I’m going to call the
surgery once or twice a week and see if something opens up…never
hurts to check!

you know that you are all a part of my heart. Your encouragement has
meant so much to me. Thanks,

Thank you for the ideas on protein and your support! I am so thankful
to have a group like this on the internet. I got my JP drain out
today!!! I am so glad to be rid of that, it was causing me some
abdominal pain. The doctor had no idea why I would be hurting so
badly on the right side, but when she had the nurse remove the drain,
MY PAIN WAS GONE!!! So, I am thrillled about that. One more milestone
crossed. I see the surgeon again in 3 weeks, and she will determine
when I can return to work. With my blood loss, I need to take iron
and build my system back up. I am enjoying the relaxing days and naps
if I need them. You all take care, Rhonda

19. Candy Justina Says:

You may discover that you need to take iron on an ongoing basis. Let
your labs be your guide. For sure watch your ferritin. Serum iron
will tell you where you are now, Ferritin will tell you what your
iron will be (it’s indicative of your iron stores). A lot easier to
fix at the ferritin stage than later on when you’ve slipped into
full anemia. The area of our body where we absorb iron has been
bypassed.
