You may discover that you need to take iron on an ongoing basis. Let
your labs be your guide. For sure watch your ferritin. Serum iron
will tell you where you are now, Ferritin will tell you what your
iron will be (it's indicative of your iron stores). A lot easier to
fix at the ferritin stage than later on when you've slipped into
full anemia. The area of our body where we absorb iron has been
bypassed.

Thank you for the ideas on protein and your support! I am so
thankful
to have a group like this on the internet. I got my JP drain out
today!!! I am so glad to be rid of that, it was causing me some

abdominal pain. The doctor had no idea why I would be hurting so
badly on the right side, but when she had the nurse remove the
drain,
MY PAIN WAS GONE!!! So, I am thrillled about that. One more
milestone
crossed. I see the surgeon again in 3 weeks, and she will determine
when I can return to work. With my blood loss, I need to take iron
and build my system back up. I am enjoying the relaxing days and
naps
if I need them. You all take care, Rhonda

Thanks for all of the encouragement, guys. I'm going to call the
surgery once or twice a week and see if something opens up...never
hurts to check!

Dear Barbie:

I have slept in a waterbed
for almost 20 years now. The first week after surgery
found me sleeping in a recliner, however. I tried a
regular bed....thought it would give me more support.
WRONG....I was so uncomfortable I thought I would die. You
have to make sure you can get UP out of the waterbed.
That is the real problem. As far as comfort, it is
wonderful. Just put pillows here and there. If you have
trouble getting up out of the waterbed now....just
imagine doing it after stomach surgery. Very painful to
strain. Gauge your own recovery and return to the
waterbed when you feel you can get up and out without too
much trouble.

Helen

Cynthia, Thank you for the answer about the
waterbed. Your time is drawing short too!!!
I can't
believe just 6 more days the time has flown for me. My
family is going to the lake with some friends today.
Like always I had to think
of an excuse not to go.
I hate that, but I don't want to embarrass my
family. I don't expect this surgery to be a miracle. but
I hope I will be able to go and do things without
being self conscious. 6 more days to go!!!!! Barbie

Barbie......When I went for my PAT yesterday the
specifically addressed this issue. You can sleep in one if you
want but.....they said it is very hard to get yourself
out of it if you have to go to the bathroom or
whatever when you need to get up. It will hurt your
incision more trying to get up even on the waveless ones
so they recommended if you have a waterbed to get a
regular one for a couple weeks.

Cynthia
Pre-Op
