forget the exact French for Rouen Y… it means
gastric bypass which involves creating a smaller stomach
pouch and a connection to the small intestine
(bypassing a between two and seven feet of small intestine).
The idea is to restrict the amount of food one can
eat (smaller pouch) and to decrease the amount of
food absorbed (the bypass). The tricky part is that
you also absorbe less nutrition so you have to be on
a vitamin supplement program after surgery and some
sweet/high fat foods will make you sick(ish). I had an RNY
12/10/98 and to date have lost 81 pounds… it’s been so
great for me

Susan

athy, I agree with you! There are so many
different names for the different procedure out here…it
can get so confusing at times. I couldn’t begin to
describe my Roux-en-y procedure but the best thing I did
was use my computer’s search engine and search under
"obesity surgery" and came up with thousands of sites to
look at. That way I could read about many different
procedures and find the one that made the most sense for my
situation. And of course for those here that are post-ops
and they can share with your what they’ve had done! I
am still pre-op until the 14th (yikes, day after
tomorrow..LOL)
Good luck with your search!
Wendy…Clearfield

he operation is called Roux-en-Y because it was
developed by a French doctor named Roux. The "Y" is in the
name because the small intestine is cut and
re-attached into the shape of a "Y", as in one ray of the "Y"
the small intestine comes from the new pouch (which
is formed when the top 5% of the stomach is stapled
off), another section of small intestine comes from the
bottom of the stomach, and in the lower ray the small
intestine is joined together and extends downward to the
rest of the digestive tract. - DAN
