Hello, I’m New!!

Wednesday, February 12th, 2003

ound your board today. I have a few questions
and if anyone has any answers I am thanking you in
advance. I am in early stages of "thinking" about having
weight loss surgery. I have a doctors appointment for
Thursday to see what all I am up against. I weight 240
pounds and am only 5′2" or 5′1" depending on whose
measuring! That puts my BMI up above that 40 level I see
mentioned everywhere. As all of you know this weight can
not in any way be healthy. However at this time I do
not have high blood pressure, or diabetes, or any
known illness. What I do have is lots of aches and
pains for which I never go to the doctor because I know
what their magic prescription would be…tell me to
lose some weight. My feet kill me, my legs hurt, my
back hurts…You get the picture here? So I guess my

A bad experience

Wednesday, February 12th, 2003

ust wanted to share with all, I had a bad fall
on Thursday directly on my stomach. And to top it
all off when I fell it was on a corner of a step and
it was right into the top to middle of my abdomond.
I sure was scared that I had hurt something inside
but I had a follow-up on Friday and the doctor said
nothing was hurt but I will be bruised for awhile. I know
one thing it hurt like —- if you know what I mean.
I had tickets to go to a musical at my daughter HS
on Thursday for opening night so I had to go and I
though I would cry it hurt so much. Doing better today
not as much pain. I received good news at the
doctors, he released me to go back to work next week. I’m
glad, I was getting tired staying at home. I go back in
one month. He will see me once a month for the first

Getting scared as time gets closer

Tuesday, February 11th, 2003

have until May 14 before I have my surgery, but
as it gets closer I get more scared of what will
happen. I’m not going to change my mind about the surgery
but I have been reading everyone of the messages on a
daily bases and my doctor will have me on a (6) 8
ounces of instant breakfast drink diet for 1 to 3 weeks
before surgery. But I just found out that I am lactose
intolerance, so I don’t know what will happen with that. I do
see the dietitian on Monday afternoon. I guess I will
just have to wait and see what will happen.

Has anyone had the R-N-Y surgery that has been
diagnois with colitis and lactose intolerance? If so I
really could need some suggestive of what to do after
surgery.

Donna
pre-op 226 lb

Long time to post

Sunday, February 9th, 2003

think the last few days it has been taking
along time to post replies to messages. I did a couple
of replies and it took two days for them to show up.
Well as long as they get there. I know that the
initial weight lost is more in the first month, but I
must have been pretty dehydrated when I went into the
hospital with my infection because I weight 5 lbs more
when I was discharged 3 days later than when I was
admitted. I have lost 32lbs total so far, does that seem to
be on track? I know this is an off subject but has
anyone had trouble with constipation associated any
particular food? I had a bad night couldn’t sleep and sick
in the stomach, not nausia, but sick. I’m guessing
that might be the problem. If I don’t go by tomorrow
I’ll have to take something, I really don’t want to

I survived the Roux-en-Y!

Saturday, February 8th, 2003

ello everyone. Thank you for your prayers and
support.

I had my Roux-en-y surgery at 10:00 A.M. on March
29th.

The first twenty-four hours after surgery was a
marathon of pain. While the NG tube was in I felt like I
was being smothered because one nostril was blocked,
the other congested, and my throat incredibly sore.
Valium helped to reduce my anxiety and the abdominal
spasms I would have no matter what part of my body I
moved. (I kept wondering if this pain and anxiety was
anything like what a woman goes through during
childbirth.)

The second day was much better. NG tube came out. The
most severe pain was gone, but I still needed Valium
to prevent abdominal spasms. I walked around some.
Had a good sponge bath, brushed my teeth, and got my
first look at the incision. About eleven inches long,

missing messages?

Saturday, February 8th, 2003

s it just me or are there several days of
messages missing from this site? I recall seeing posts
from Helen? Oh well, anyway I’m having surgery on
April 14th and I’m very excited and nervous all at the
same time. Any words of support would really be
appreciated now since I feel like I’m trying to talk myself
out of this now! I know its just a bad case of nerves
now that its ME headed for the knife!
Thanks again
Helen for all the words of support and your counsel.
Kim, Kelly and Corinna, I hope you are all doing well!
And Terri, thanks so much for staying in contact with
me and being my friend! Cheryl and sis…3 peas in a
pod! God bless everyone!
Wendy

surgery date has been scheduled

Saturday, February 8th, 2003

i everyone…..Well it’s finally happened, the
date for surgery has been set for April 14th. The
doctor’s office orignally gave me the 7th, which was way
too short a notice for my husband to take off from
work so the following Wednesday it is!
Wow, now I’m
horribly nervous and shakin’ in my boots. It’s really easy
to be supportive of everyone else but when it comes
to yourself you can’t find the words or thoughts to
comfort yourself! So now I have a week and a half to talk
myself out of this? Any and all words of support would
really be appreciated now folks!
Helen,I want you
know I appreciate your counsel and comfort. Kim, Kelly
and Corinna, I pray you are all doing well since your
surgery! And TERRI,
thanks for being a friend to me and
staying in touch with me…looks like we’ll be going

nutrition supplements

Friday, February 7th, 2003

i everybody! My sister and I went for our pre-op
testing yesterday. The barium swallow wasn’t much fun,
and Barb (my sister) had to have an arterial blood
gas drawn since she smokes - that was really painful
for her. We are having our RNY surgeries on April 12
and 13.

My question is this — we had an
appointment with the dietitian and she told us all about the
1/2 cup of pureed food per meal, etc. I specifically
asked her about supplements (protein, etc) and she said
that it was not necessary because we should be able to
get all we need with three meals plus two cups of
milk plus the multi-vitamin that the surgeon will
prescribe. I don’t know yet what that vitamin is, but with
what I have learned on this board and others I can’t
believe we will get enough protein, iron, etc.

I
