nursing after wls?

Monday, March 31st, 2003

I have a nine month old, Elijah , who is still
breastfeeding. I am going to nurse him through the surgery. I
have the support of my physician and Elijah’s
pediatrician. I am going to be on med’s that won’t harm him
when I am home, and while I am in the hospital I can
nurse after the anethesia med’s are out of me. :) I can
even nurse while on Morphine… my doctor said it
doesn’t go to the breastmilk. I however and quite nervous
about finding a "comfortable" position to hold him. My
La Leche League director gave me a few positions,
but I wanted to know if any of you have done this and
what worked best for you? <br>Has anyone had success
in this? If so, please let me know. I have posted on
my breastfeeding loop and no one has had this type
of surgery.<br>Thank you for all of your

Hi everyone

i all! Just thought I’d post a couple of lines
to say hello and that I’m still alive! I am just
over 8 weeks post op and creeping up on 55 pounds lost
(by my scales). I am hoping to lose at least another
20 pounds by August 14th when I fly home to
California for the birth of my first granddaughter. Buying
an airline ticket was something I never ever would
of thought of doing just a few short months ago
because of the horrible embarrassment of trying to
squeeze into one of those stupid 11 inch wide airline
seats!<br>Now who do you know besides a child that has an 11
inch backside?! LOL…..<br>"Losing" almost 55 pounds
has "gained" me a ton of confidence too! My whole
attitude about my new life style changes has given me a
new lease on life and I look forward to each day with

weight is gone to date. I know you were so nervous about
the surgery and I know everything went better than
you imagined. Drop a line soon…Helen

Friday, March 28th, 2003

i my name is Annie with an update, I had RNY 7
1/2 months ago Dr.Owens , Orange, CA. Thank God no
complications I have lost #125 and feel great, no more sleep
apnea, no more meds, blood pressure normal. I still have
about #80 to go to reach a "high goal" I am so greatful
for this surgery I would do it again in a FLASH! I
was scared and informed of possible complications
including death but I was prepared and weighed the pros and
cons and chose surgery, I am now LIVING not just
existing!….Annie….

erri here from SLC. I am 5 weeks postop, have
lost 45 pounds and at least one pants size and one of
my chins. Unfortunately, the belly is the last thing
to go..<br>Good luck to all the new folks who are
awaiting news from your insurance companies. the waiting
can be excruciating.<br>I have a question for the
postop folks.<br>Have any of you had a problem with
being unable to eat more than an ounce or so at a time?
I can only eat abt an ounce once or twice a day
right now, and get nauseated when I take my
medications. Also am very sensitive to anything with any fat
content,it generally comes back up.<br>Dr. Halverson says
its not unusual to have this happen during the
recovery period, but if it has not improved in 2 weeks,
that he may want to do an endoscopy to see if my

Helen a question

Wednesday, March 26th, 2003

elen,<br>You sure give everyone here lots of
positive information. I did read a few days or so back
where you were concerned about a few extra pounds that
you gained. So that got me to thinking and I was
wondering if you know the answer to this question. If after
this surgery we eat so little for now on…and for
what ever reasons we gain a few pounds…how the heck
do you diet to get that off? I mean I know right now
if I eat 2000 calories a day and then cut down to
1500 calories I will lose some weight. But with eating
so very little in the first place…do you pretty
well have to depend on exercising more and more? Just
curious as I know this is also a concern that will come
up with others in time as well. Thanks!!

Lisa-Tricare

Wednesday, March 26th, 2003

isa,<br>Just wanted to let you know I too have
Tricare and this is how things went for me. Thank
goodness Wendy’s post were most informative and helpful
and also gave me some confidence that I had a chance
for approval. I went to my PCP on April 5th to get my
referral to a surgeon. They quickly set me up with an
appointment on April 15th to see a surgeon however they made
a mistake and he didnt even do WLS. Again they set
me up another appointment which was for May 13 with
the surgeon. Loved him…all went well there and his
office sent my info by fax to Tricare on May 17th.
Tricare said they would make a decision in 72 hours.
HOWEVER…this is what I found out. If you fall within their
guidelines then its pretty cut and dry and the decision is
made within that time frame. However…I did not fall
