Question about haircare after surgery
i everyone!
I’m new to this group and I
recently had the surgery done 3/9/99. I’m happy to say
that I’ve lost 50lbs. and feel very healthy and full
of energy. I feel like this is one of the best
decisions I’ve ever made, and I only wish I got it done
sooner. One question that I have has to do with hair. I
noticed that just over a week ago (around May 22nd) that
I started to lose some hair. I’ve always had very
long thick hair and I seem to shed a little every year
as it gets close to summer. However, it never seems
to shed as much as it has recently. I just wanted to
know if anyone else has encountered this condition
after surgery and if so what have they done to treat
it…any special shampoos or vitamins specific for hair
health. I would appreciate any advice. Hope everything is
working out for everyone and I’m excited to be a part of
this club!

i, welcome to the group! In regards to your
question concerning your hair loss. Don’t get to worried
about it. We will all most likely suffer somewhat from
this problem within the first year after surgery.
Generally within the first 4 months following surgery is
what I was told by my surgeon. It has to do with the
decreased amount of proteins we ingest and trace minerals,
but mainly the decreased proteins. I realize that
most of us (post ops) consume mostly protein in our
daily diets but it’s still not enough or at least the
same amounts we were getting prior to the surgery. Our
body responds to this by our hair thinning. But not to
worry too much because eventually the hair thinning
will stop. I think it is a rare case to hear of
anyone’s hair thinning so much to the point of bald spots
but then again I’m no expert on the subject
either!
I perfer to keep my hair short for the time being
and once the hair thinning stops maybe I’ll grow it
out again, but I sort of like my hair short so I just
may keep it this way, who knows! There are products
on the market I’ve heard people speak of that they
claim works miracles for hair thinning but I’ve also
heard they are way high priced and come in very small
bottles, so I don’t know if I’d want to put that much
investment into these products if my hair were just thinning
slightly. If you want, check with a well named beauty
supply shop and I bet they could give you some leads on
products but have your check book with
you!……LOL……Good luck.
God

ating. You will learn to eat correctly after the surgery
and you will know if you are doing it right if you DO
NOT experience vomiting. Vomiting is the key to
knowing you are heading in the wrong direction. I have
vomited only about five times in two years and each time
I only had myself to blame. I felt so bad
afterwards I have to lay down and rest. I learn very fast
that overeating is not worth the discomfort. You will
experience something you never did before….a sense of
fullness. As soon as you feel this new sensation, stop
eating. Don’t push your eating or that is when the
vomiting enters the picture. Good luck to you and your
daughter. Old habits die hard, but the surgery is sure a
blessing getting those habits in line once and for all.

Dear Louise: I had my surgery on August 14, 1997,
so I am fast approaching my second anniversary. I
had just the gastric by-pass with no special banding,
etc. I have lost between 110 and 115 lbs. It is at the
point of fluctuating but I am pretty well settled at
the 140-145 lb. mark. I went out to Ponderosa last
night. I can everyone that "all you can eat" buffets are
a waste of time and money. I only agreed to go
because my daughter wanted their ice cream. Anyway, I am
at the point of being able to eat more, so to some
this might sound like a lot. My menu was:

1 -
taco with meat and cheese
1 - meatball
1 - piece
off a chicken leg
1 - square of cherry jello
1
- slice cantalope
1 - square of
watermelon
1/4 - cup chicken noodle soup broth
2 -
saltines
3 - cups of coffee

All this cost me $6.99. I
told my husband that I drank so much coffee because I
was trying to make it to the $6.99 worth. If after
the surgery you want to know how you got the way you
did, go to one of these buffets and just watch some of
the people eat. It is unbelievable. Well, Have to go.
Take care…Helen
