i Janet, my name is Wendy. I currently live in
Utah due to hubby working civil service at Hill AFB,
but we are from the bay area too! I grew up in
Hayward and just recently moved from the
Fairfield/Vacaville area. I really miss home, we’ve been in Utah a
short 10 months.
So you’re having an open RNY soon.
You’ll been on the "other side" before you know it!
You’re only giving yourself 2 weeks to recover? Why such
a short amount of time if you don’t mind me
asking?
Do you have a desk type job? You certainly don’t
want to rush yourself in recovery with this surgery!
You may consider only going back to work part time,
this recovery is rough. You’ll be pretty tired the
first 30 days after surgery and that’s without going
back to work. Heck, I couldn’t get out of a chair

without help the first 10 days after surgery! My husband
took about a week and a half off work just to help me
with things like getting up and down, showering and
cooking. I’m just over 7 weeks post op now and beginning
to feel "human" again.
Having the procedure done
Lap as opposed to open has advantages but the time on
the table is much longer than the typical "open" RNY.
My surgery was only 90 minutes and that included the
gall bladder removal. The surgeon said the surgery
would have been an hour if I hadn’t had to have the
gall bladder out. Of course folks with a Lap RNY
recover quicker because of the less invasive procedure
done to their bodies. Not to mention the couple of
"bandaid" scars from the Lap as opposed to the 9 or 10 inch
incision scar for the open procedure.

you operation. I hope you have lots of support around
you during and after the surgery because that is so
very important for your recovery! God

I had my surgery on May 14, 1999, and
was going to return to work on June 1, but was not
able to do so. I still get very tried very easily.
When I seen my surgeon on May 24th, he said I could go
back to work on June 21 at part time for 2 weeks, and
the only reason he let me go back then is that I sit
at a computer all day and post insurance payments.
With past surgerys I have always able to return to
work in 2 weeks, but not with this surgery. So if
possible take the time to recover, you will be thankful
for the time.
