Want Advice
I was speaking with my 5′2" 300# friend (I am
5′6" 266# we were discussing WLS since my Dr suggested
it to me) and she is totally afraid of surgery/diet
restrictions and she said and I quote " I would rather choose
death than stick to a diet", and had tons of negative
opinions about the surgery (I think she is misinformed) I
try to tell her she is a prime candidate for this
surgery, she has sleep apnea, a hiatal hernia etc. Do I
waist (he he : waste) my time, or do you have any other
suggestions for people who do not want the surgery?

I am going to have the surgery on Monday. I am
totally prepared mind, body and soul for this. If your
friend is negative towards WLS then they are not ready
mentally to face what is making them eat in the first
place. We all have to face the real issues - What makes
us eat and why we can’t stick to diets. Denying
myself was something I could not do. Now that I am ready
to let the person inside me out I find that - that
is the person I am denying - ME. All you can do is
listen and be a friend to this person. All things come
in time when they are suppose to happen. That’s just
how I feel.
Nancy

You are right, I just hate hearing from her "I
hate being fat, yet I will not do anything about it"
As for me, I will try EVERYTHING, I am that
desperate, I refuse to get any bigger!!! I just don’t
understand her mentality! AND I don’t want her to die, she
is the greatest friend….

Giving advice to someone that doesn’t want it is
a waste of your time and theirs! Only if a person
is WILLING ot make changes in their own life
PERMENANATLY will the surgery be successful. I know two people
that have gained all their weight back, because of
never making any changes in their diet. If your doctor
suggested it for YOU, don’t worry about your friend, there
are plenty of us out there willing to offer you
support and advice as YOU face the days ahead. In turn,
maybe through your example your friend may become
enlightened to the truths of the surgery by watching your
life and health change.
Good luck in finding your
way in this path!
Cindy
Open RNY
