Im sorry darlin. It wasnt my intention to upset
you. I remember how I was on eggshells waiting too.
You wont be denied for this reason, but it may throw
a wrench in things and tie it up. I just get so
angry seeing how people get screwed out of something
that can save their life. Dont fret...if you are truly
a candidate, then you will be fine.

Great! It sounds like this may cause more
problems. I will talk to my pcp on Monday and see what he
thinks. If it isn't 1 thing it's another. It all made
logical sense when we talked. I told him I was willing to
pay for the evaluation if I needed too. Just
something else for me to worry about now.

Im sorry but a legitimate category? Your
depressed becasue you cant adjust to being fat? So he
diagnoses you with an adjustment discrder instead of
depression? I am a psychologist (MA, MFCA), and I have had
this surgery. I speak from 6 1/2 years of education
that this is the stupidest thing Ive heard yet. When
insurance sees "adjustment disorder" they are inclined to
think, "well with adjustment disorder, how do we know
she will adjust to the surgery?" If he had just
called it depression like any level headed psychologist
would have, they would assume the depression is related
to obesity and then consider it a co-morbidity. I
would definately ask this person to revise their
diagnosis to more accurately reflect the truth.

Dear Mossy: I was diagnosed with "Degenitive bone
deterioration" before my surgery. I constantly had back pain.
The doctor said if I didn't lose weight, I would
eventually end up in a wheelchair. I still get backaches
today, but all it takes is a little rest and I am back
on my feet again. I take a calcium supplement now. I
am sure the deterioration was due to nothing more
than being over-weight. Don't sweat it....a lot of
sypmtoms will disappear once the weight is
gone.

Helen
(Surgery 8-14-1997)

Linda,

Hi! I don't think either diagnosis
will hurt your chances of getting approved. But
depression is something that every fat person has, and it
certainly didn't hurt me in getting approval, it helped me.
But, st.claire is right, I wouldn't see him again
unless you HAVE to. Best of luck, keep us
posted.

Hugs,
Laura

He didn't make anything up. It is a legitimate diagnosis that I fit into. But,
I do hope it doesn't hurt my chances. Why do you think it will? Linda

Your psychologist should be shot. If you are
depressed, it wont hurt your chances of surgery but an
adjustment disorder can. I cannot believe he would make up
symptoms just to get insurance to pay the bill.....which
by the way is a load of crud. If the visit was
approved, insurance wont back out becasue there wasnt a
diagnosis. If it was approved as pre-screening to the
surgery then its approved and that is that. Id tell him
to revise his evaluation to tell the truth and then
never go see him again
