Please help..
No one responded to my last post and I have to
believe that this is the best place to get my answers.
With such a large group of women someone has to know.
My surgeon is no longer with my group and my GP
doesnt know the answer.
has anyone
heard/learned/asked about birth control? I have been on the pill for
4 years and have had very light 2-3 day cycles.
Ever since surgery my periods are heavy and 7-8 days.
Im assuming that my pills arent absorbing and its
just like im not on them at all. I cant become
pregnant and I cant take the depo. Please someone, tell me
what your doctors say about birth control
pills……….Are they absorbing ok. I just had a normal roux-en-y
GPS.
Im also allergic to latex so condoms and some
sponges are out. Its abstinence until I learn more.

Your gynecologist should be able to help you with
this. I know after surgery I did not have a cycle for 2
months. I am not on the pill had a tubal years ago. I am
49 and starting the change, however, you might be
right, you may not be absorbing the pill correctly. I go
to my group meeting tonight for WLS. I will bring
this up and get you an answer.

Phyliss

StClair~ I don’t know about the pill and
absorbtion….I don’t need to worry about that anymore(Had the
Hubby fixed for Christmas one year lol) But I do know
that this surgery can goof up your hormones for a
while…My surgeon told me periods could be few and far
between OR everyother week and very heavy anywhere up to
6 months after this surgery….something in your
body goes into shock or something…. I didn’t have a
period for 7 weeks after surgery, and have had 4 since (
I am 16 weeks post-op) So, I wouldn’t worry about
how heavy your flow is….I do however take a couple
other medications, and have been told that the
absorbtion of them should be fine…I usually take them on
an empty stomach with water only, and before bed so
I don’t go to the bathroom for a couple of hours
just in case, but that wasn’t anyones idea but my
own….I would call any surgeon that does this surgery and
talk to his nurse….she would probably be more
helpful….Good luck finding your answers Kelli

I had wls back in March, and I had to sign a
release that stated that I understood the chance of
getting pregnate after surgery was very high and the
effectiveness of birth control,(especially the pill) was very
low. The reason is what you suspected, poor
absorbtion.

As I understand, estrogen is stored in fat cells and with weight loss the
estrogen is released in abnormal amounts. So it could just be that, but I would
call a Dr. just to check.

Hi there,
I can’t say I know about the "pill"
not absorbing correctly, but you can always switch to
the monthly "shot" I have always been in the same
boat with contraceptives… so it is difficult… but
i had my tubes tied… because I am DONE… keep
asking… until you get an ANSWER from some doctor, there
has to be one out there that knows for sure.
Cindy

I don’t know if the pills are absorbed normally
after surgery, but I know alot of women rely on the
pill to keep from getting pregnant their first year
after wls, so it seems like bariatric surgeons would
have figured something out if the pill wasn’t good
enough for us. I am not on the pill, but my periods were
very light before my WLS too. After surgery, I have
had very heavy and long periods. Someone told me that
a lot of estrogen is stored in our fat, and as we
burn fat quickly, that estrogen gets released and
causes a hormonal tidal wave for a while. I would guess
that your problem would settle down on its own once
your weight loss levels off, but of course you should
ask your gynecologist for his opinion. Also, even
though your surgeon isn’t with your group anymore, I bet
you could still call his office and ask his nurse
this question. Good Luck!
