Surgical Consult
Hello all. I’m fairly new to this club. I’ve been
trying to have weight loss surgery for 6 years now but
each time my insurance company "shoots me down!" Well,
my current insurance company has approved for me to
have a surgical consult on July 3rd. I’m really
nervous because this is the furthest I’ve ever gotten. I
know the doctor is going to ask: "Why do you think
this surgery is going to help you when you have failed
so many diets?!" Any suggestions on how to answer
this question would really help! With a BMI of 55.1, I
really need this surgery. Thanks in
advance!:)

Tracey

Why do you think this surgery is going to help
you when you have failed so many diets?
Dear
Doctor,
I have been overweight (all, most) of my life. Yes,
I have tried many diets, and each time I thought
this is going to be the one. Each time I planned how
much weight I was going to lose, how I was going to
look, what size I was going to wear. Each time I would
lose some weight, keep it off for a time and gain it
back. Most times I gained weight I would think yeah I
screwed up again, but sometimes I would keep positive nad
try something else…again. Yes I have failed at
dieting. This just proves that I need a tool to help me.
The surgery will help me and motivate me. While I am
losing weight easily in the first (3,4,5) months, I will
concentrate on maintaining good habits. The initial loss in
weight will give me energy I never had before and it
will enable me be active and do things I can’t do now
like (play with my kids, go for a stroll, swim,
jog, etc). Increasing my activity will only help me lose
more. The surgery will be my tool for success in many
ways. The increased self esteem will allow me to do all
the things that my weight has been holding back. Yes
doctor I have failed, but the surgery will give me a
tool so I can be successful. And remember doctor,
obesity is a documented genetic disease, and for any
other disease wouldn’t you do your best to help your
patients overcome and recover? Wouldn’t you recommend a
proven treatment that would help your patient’s risk of
death decrease at least 90%? No you won’t refer me? Oh
well I will just go see someone who will.

(Some
