hi linda, the first thing i was given to drink
after my surgery was a diet slice. my dr. says it's ok
if you can tolerate it. i found that using a straw
really helped. it was about 2 weeks before i could
handle diet coke and the dr. told me to switch to
caffeine free. i drink 1-12 oz. can a day compared to 6
pre-op. you have to squeeze all the water and protein
drinks in so it's kinda hard to fit much soda in the
plan...lol. dyan

Dear Linda: I also love my diet colas...but right
after surgery you will not be able to tolerate them.
Too much fizz. You will be able to drink some ginger
ale that is "flat" but that tastes like crap. I fully
enjoy my diet colas now, but it did take a good year
after surgery to be able to take a big gulp and enjoy
it. I still have the occasional gas bubble that gets
"stuck" in my stomach and boy does that hurt....It takes
a minute to work it up and then I just drink some
more. I have never heard where sodas are out "forever."
I would advise slow though.

Helen (Surgery

THAT!!!!

Hi there!
My doc said NO to soadas! The reason
was in his years of the surgery e USED to say OKAY
but has since seen too many problems asociated with
the drinking of sodas. The gas is BAD for your
stomach.... it helps to expand your pouch and beause they are
naturally corrosive he has had many patients whose "satple
line" broke and he had to redo their surgery. I was
actually in the hospital with one woman. And let's face it
another way... you can only eat and drink so much and
diet soda has NO nutritional value... don't waste your
space! You need REAL water... and REAL food! as for the
question on straws... I use them occasionally, but I am
careful to "sip" straws are a great way to get a bunch of
gas... just as "gulping" is! But hey these are just a
few more ways you have had to adjust your life... and

it is all for the better! Good
luck!
Cindy
Open RNY 8/2/99
preop 298
current 168!
