2 Weeks Post Op

I’m back and so excited. Sorry, I haven’t written
sooner.I HAVE BEEN SO EXCITED. Did I say that? 2 weeks
today and I have lost 35 lbs. Can you believe it? The
surgery was a wiz. No probelms. Out in 2 days. I had an
open medial RNY. I am still wearing my 25 staples
proudly like a medal! They will come out Monday.
I
feel great. I’m taking short drives and wish I could
bend over to work in my garden while I have time off,
but am still not suppose to lift over 10 lbs, and
bending over is not comfortable.
I get tired real
easy and have to head back to the recliner.
For
the most part it has been a very positive experience.
I was on Morphine and Demerol for the first 4 or 5
days, but Extra-strength Tylenol after that. I had some
problems sleeping, but the doc gave my some pills to help

me through the transition.
If you haven’t had
your surgery yet, please know that although people may
have problems, I was a 350lb, 5 foot 5 inch woman that
sailed through it.I have a great doctor that believes in
the surgery whole-heartedly and makes all the
difference.
The only problem I have now, is finding a
protein I like. One suggestion I have for any pe-op
people out there. Search and find one you like before
surgery and don’t wait until after, because the gag
reflex comes very much alive afterwards.
I am very
happy about my decision so far. I have sarted a new
closet, and garbage bag for clothes that have outgrown
me, and I already have a few things in them! Good
luck to everyone out there who is on their way to
surgery. Stay positive! It makes a difference. Listen to
your body. It will be talking to you a
lot.
Sincerely,
Sue
Open RNY 03/08/01

Congratulations! I am so excited for you. I hope
I can have this surgery, too. Keep sharing! I also
live in Washington. May I ask who your insurance
company is, and did they pay for the surgery? Also who
did your surgery?

thanks for sharing!

Hey kcornman,
My insurance company is Cigna
PPO and I have a $1500.00 a year out of pocket limit
and they pay the rest. Not bad for a total of around
$30,000. No one can believe when they see me that I just
had this major surgery 2 weeks ago and I look and am
getting around as well as I am. My sister had a proximal
2 years ago and she suffered her first few weeks of
post-op, although after that everything was great! She had
a different doctor who does very few of these
surgeries although he was a thoracic surgeon also. My
doctor is Ross Fox. He is located in Tacoma. He is one
of the very first in the country to do these
surgeries exclusively, so he knows what works. I would
highly recommend him. He is a very sweet and caring man
also. It also doesn’t take forever to get a surgery

date, because that is all they do. He has a large
office support staff who are all very nice. I was out of
the hospital the second day and I should have left
the day after. What kind of surgery are you thinking
about? He has so many choices. I would recommend going
to one of his discussion meetings. It’s a few hours
long and you get to meet Dr. Fox and ask as many
questions as your heart desires. I went twice! Once in
November and again, the night before surgery. Every other
day I get on the scale and I have a loss. I get my
staples out on Monday. I get sore, especially if I do
alot of bending over, or sitting up straight. I can
even almost sleep flat on my stomach! Well, I guess
this is alot more information that most people really
want to hear so I’ll sign off for now. Reply with any
other questions you may have.
Sue

RNY

Regarding finding a protein supplement that you
like… I can understand whole-heartedly. My surgeon
recommends sugar-free Carnation Instant Breakfast powder
mixed with milk. But, besides the fact that it is a
rather poor source of protein, I am very lactose
intolerant, so I can’t use it. I searched high and low for a
protein powder that didn’t make me gag, and wasted a lot
of money in the process. What I now recommend is to
go to www.vitalady.com and order some protein
samples from her. You can buy the samples instead of the
big 2 or 3 pound containers and get a taste of them
to see what you like or hate. The very best one I
have found so far is Proscore 100 Chocolate. I take
two scoops of the powder and blend it with 6-8 ounces
of cold water. You have to use a blender since it

doesn’t mix well with a spoon. It is quite tasty and
doesn’t have the after-taste that a lot of the others do.
Plus it is pre-digested protein, so your body gets the
most benefit from it. I am a year and a half post-op.
I lost all my weight (120lb) in the first 11
months. Now, I am 7 months pregnant and have gained 10
pounds, but it is all baby! Check out my web site,
