Back from meeting the surgeon
Hello everyone! Well, it looks like my wait is
going to be even longer. My surgeon wants me to quit
smoking before he does this. He was a very nice man. Of
course I didn’t hear about 20 min. of what he had to say
after he told me I would have to stop smoking. I’ve
been wanting to, it’s just frightning. My wonderful
other half is going to quit with me..isn’t that nice.
Well, they told me that is could take up to 10 weeks
depending on how fast the insurance is processed. I’ll let
everyone know when I get a date. I have so many more
questions and need to call back, but I hate to. I loved
that they had big chairs throughout all of the
building. I’m still scared to death about having this done,
but I want it.
I have a quick question that I
need to ask you guys. Someone told me that they saw a
48hrs special on people that had this done and the
infection after surgery caused they to have deformities.
Have any of you heard about this. Maybe I can get the
information from you all instead of calling BTC back.
One
more thing…thank you to everyone who wrote me back
after my last post. It really makes a difference to
know that someone is listening. It also looks like you
guys are going to be my support group after this is
over. I live too far away from any of the other ones.
o.k. o.k. one more thing. After I weighed at the
center i went out to tell my girlfriend about it and she
hadn’t realized I had gained so much weight. She is now
fully supportive in my decision. My mom is almost
there, she’s just got thousands of questions she wants
me to ask. Does anyone know how to tell your
children about this. I have a 7 year old boy and he
doesn’t know anything about it. I’m affraid he would
worry if he knew I was going to have surgery, but I’m
also affraid of dying on the surgery table and him not
knowing anything. Hard decision.

Talk to you
later…Brandy

Brandy,

Congratulations on your office
visit. Yes you must stop smoking. As far as deformities
go, I have never heard of this and I have spoken and
been writing many people who have had this surgery. As
far as telling your son, my suggestion is as the
surgery gets closer and you are sure you are going to
have the surgery, sit with him and explain to him what
you are having done and why. Also if you tell him
about all the things you will be able to do with him
after the surgery he will better understand. Several of
my friends with kids did this and it worked out very
well.

Please keep in touch and feel free to contact me at any
time with any questions.

Phyliss
Surgery

Phylis,

Thanks for the help. I was really concerned about the infection.
I know I have to quit smoking and I want to, it’s just frightning. I’ll keep you
posted.

Brandy

I had many of the same questions and concerns. My
surgery was May 1 of this year. I am just glad to have it
over with. My son is 11 years old and he is my pride
and joy. I gave him enough information so he would
know what was going on but not sooo much that he would
be worried. My sister came to stay with him while I
was in the hospital last week which helped as I did
not want my son to see me in the hospital with all
the tubes & IV. My husband and I both called home
every night. This worked well for us.

Brandy,

I just wanted to let you
know..this surgery was my motivation to quit smoking. I
didn’t want them to say I couldn’t have the surgery
because my lungs wouldn’t tolerate it. I had my last
cigarette on 1/20/01 (10 days after I started looking into
the surgery).
I’m now 7 1/2 wks post and I don’t
miss them. I was wanting to quit but I just couldn’t.

Karen, Thanks for the encouraging note! I really
want to stop smoking and I have wanted to for a long
time, but feared I would gain sooooo much more weight.
I really think now is the time for me. I’ve been
cutting way back and trying to slowly ween myself off of
them. The last time I stopped smoking was when I was
pregnant and it wasn’t that hard because I knew I had a
reason, so I think about this in the same way..like I
have a reason to stop.
Thank you, Brandy
