You guys are great!!!
I just want to thank everyone who wrote such nice
things in response to my smoking. You have no idea how
much it means to me. I know that everyone here at home
supports me, but I really would love to hear it more. I
was suprised that they haven’t said much about it.
Sooo, let me tell you again, it means a great deal to
me to hear such positive
things.

Brandy

Oh, I can’t forget to say Way to Go to everyone
else
who is fighting this with me. We are all in the same
shoes aren’t we? It’s nice to know that I’m not alone.
Again, Thank you!

Brandy: I have a somewhat funny story. I started
reading these posts at the beginning of the year when I
was researching WLS. When I decided that WLS was for
me I scheduled my 1st group consultation which was
March 26thish, and since the word in the clubs was that
you had to quit smoking a month before surgery I
stopped. My husband even stopped with me. I did the same
thing you all are doing, biting nails, eating carrots,
bitching and whining, etc. Sooooo, I quit, husband quits,
we are smoke free for over a month when we show up
for group consult and the surgeon when asked, "Do we
have to quit smoking before surgery?" by one of the
patients to be answers, "What do I look like, your mother?
Some Doctors require it, I don’t." AGHHHHH! But, hey!
We’d already quit, and we are still smoke free, which
is to our advantage!!! So, quit. Quit for surgery if
you wish, but ultimately you are quitting for
yourself, your kids, and your life, which is going to be so
great, but screw it up with lung cancer or
emphesema?
Congrats and keep up the good work!
Cathy

Cathy, That was funny. I bet you are still glad you quit. I know I am. My
roomate has stopped as of today. Now it won’t be so tempting around the house.

If you are considering having surgery and you
smoke, you have a greater chance of
complications.
First of all, smoking deprives your entire body of
needed oxygen. Secondly, smoking by-products clog the
blood stream. These are extremely important for wound
healing and preventing infection. Additionally, smoking
effects the lungs capacity to expand fully. Along with
the anesthia and the pain after surgery, you would
have a greater chance of developing pneumonia.
When
one quits smoking, the lungs due begin to repair
themselves. So the sooner, the better. You will have greater
success with WLS if you quit smoking now. Good luck and
wish you my best.

Dottie
