On the other side
Hi,
I am on the other side. I had my long
limb July 19th. I am doing pretty good. Very,Very Weak
though.I really didn’t have any pain after ther third day
but I keep running about a 100 degree temp. I think I
finally broke this yesterday, at least I hope. The food
has been going pretty good
but I can only eat 5
meals a day. I’m too full
when it comes to the sixth
one. Also I have major gas.

Roger

Congratulations, Roger !!! I’ve never seen the
expression "long limb"
before…..is that the
same as an open RNY? Just curious.
It is the same except the hook the old
stomach
3′ from the bottom of my small intestines
instead
of the normal 12 to 15′up. They do this for
more
potential weight loss (due to me being so big)
I weighed
424lbs going in to the hospital (on the 19th) & weighed
406 coming out last friday. I’ll
get to weigh
myself friday when I go back 31 Staples pulled.

Thanks for replying, Roger. Now I have yet
another question for my surgeon
when I see him
because I believe I’m in the same boat as you.
I wish you
continued success.

Roger, I have a question. Being in the 400+ group
myself, I am concerned about the length of the bypass. My
surgeon (if I ever get approved by my insurance company)
only bypasses 15 cm.
From what I understand, the
longer the bypass, the more chance for complications in
the future from malabsorbtion. What does your dr. say
about this?

Kim,
For what it is worth, I talked to my doctor the other day and he does a
proximal bypass of 75cm.
Roch

Thanks, Roch.

I guess that means that a
short bypass is a "distal bypass".

Anybody out
there have experience post-op with a short (15 cm)
bypass? The main thing I am concerned about is getting
the weight off, and keeping it off, but also being
healthy.

I was bypassed 150 cm’s with a 15cc pouch.
Vicki
VBG 6-97
RNY open

i think we have all been there and we have all done that and guess what we have
all gotten BIGGER T-shirts. HAHA

Hi Kim,

No actually I asked the doctor
that exact question and a distal is infact a longer
bypass

A proximal is a short one. I believe that anyting
shorter 150 cm is considered a proximal and a distal is
longer than than. My doctor told me that there are more
problems with mal- absorption with a distal. Also it makes
sence that if they start shorter and they need to "fix"
it later they have more to work
with.

Remember you intestines are pretty long. 75cm is a little
more that 2 feet. 15 cm is less than 6 inches. Hope
this helps and I hope I have my facts straight. (If I
don’t, I know I will hear about it anyway. LOL)

Thanks, Roch. Now I’m a little clearer on the
terminology. When I was meeting the the Corporate Review Board
for Regence on Monday, the medical director asked my
what kind of surgery my surgeon was proposing, and I
just said gastric bypass (not the vbg).

I’m
getting really antsy, had to really work to not pick up
the phone and call Regence yesterday. I promised
myself I would wait until Friday morning before I would
call. AAAAAARHGH!

Hi Kim,
Well good luck to you for your
approval. I guess that am in a holding pattern right now.
My surgeon handles all of the insurance stuff and
basically told me not to worry about it. So I am just
waiting for a slot in the operating room in the hospital
that I want. My Dr is very "popular" and the hospital
I want is booked for months. I have told him to put
me on a cancelation list. If I don’t have this done
before November I will have to wait untill April of next
year because of my job.

Roch
