Familie’s support

Wednesday, September 29th, 2004

I have been approved for the surgery by my
insurance company, but many of my family members do not
approve of wls. They state there are too many risks
involved and that there are other alternatives. As you
know, I have tried these. Sometimes, I think that they
do not want me to succeed. I think that they are
afraid of the positive changes that this will bring
about. I think that they are somewhat jealous.
Especially, when I think of the prejudice that I was raised
with. The struggle I had to maintain my self-esteem,
even with my own family. I am doing this for me. I
want to live a "normal" life. I am making this change
happen for myself, and don’t get in my way! :) <br>Thanks, I needed to vent. This helps me to remain
focused.<br><br>Dottie<br>Pre-op DS

The great Prader willi debate

Tuesday, September 28th, 2004

Hi all, I have had WLS and am a 2nd year docotral
student who has spent alot of time studying eating
disorders. <br> PWS is a birth defect that affects 1 in
15000 and starts with low birth weight, failure to
thrive, muscle weakness, etc. There are also delayed
developmental milestones and then a compulsion to eat in
childhood. there is abnormal growth, short stature,
incomplete sexual genetalia development, mood swings. 95% of
PWS adults have IQ’s in the mild retarded range. PWS
people have have problems with abnormal caloric
utilization, speech language difficulties, dental problems,
high pain threshhold and irregularities in body
temperature control. And DEPRESSION.<br> While it is not my
business, I have not heard Ljgyrl talk about her
development. Plenty of fat people develop their food problems

plateau

Monday, September 27th, 2004

Hi all, I hope you remember me- I posted the
other week that I was on a plateau (9 weeks post op)
and wondered if it happened to any of you post ops. I
got a great many responses and you were all wonderful
and helpful. Thank you all for your support- my
plateau seems to have ended (for now) and I lost another
5 pounds!! :)

LJgyrl/willi-prader

Saturday, September 25th, 2004

I have talked to you before and I am very
concerned about this. You mentioned you had willi-prader
syndrome….this is the one main things that is a NO-NO to
undertake this surgery. I can’t see a surgeon allowing you
to go thru with the surgery if you truly have this
syndrome…..I am just worried that you will hurt yourself
physically with binging post op!! Please look at this long
and hard before going further!<br><br>A concerned

Last nights inspiration

Saturday, September 25th, 2004

Hi All,<br>I want to share last-nights
inspiration. I go to a support group in Ventura (the 1st
Wednesday of the month). Last-nights guest speaker was a 7
month post-op patient. In this time, he has lost 210
lbs. "Gone Forever." He went into surgery frightened.
Tried to get out of it when he was on the table. He
weighed 538 lbs. then. The doctor was able to do a
laproscopic Duodenal Switch.<br>He said, "I feel like I been
given a new life." Also, he felt he could not stress
enough the importance of a support-person. <br>It was
phenomenal to see the changes in him. You could fit two of
him in his old shorts and shirt. <br>It is certainly
wonderful to hear from those that have been there. I just
wanted to share.<br><br>Dottie<br>Pre-op DS

Re; Drs & Cost

Thursday, September 23rd, 2004

Hi all!<br><br>This morning I posted asking ?’s
about the surgery and contact The Ontario Health
Insurance Plan and found out that it is classed as COSMETIC
EVEN with health problems.<br><br>I contacted several
Dr.’s offices and found out that non of them are taking
patients until the middle of next year and that the
patients have to be over 400 lbs (I’am 260 lbs) and in
SEVERE MEDICAL CRISIS.<br><br>Also, they told me that to
open you up it is covered by our OHIP - NO INSURANCE
PLANS COVER IT - and for the initial operation it costs
$10,000. I have the $$ but can’t get anyone to do
it.<br><br>Looks like I have to find an alternative route cause I
really don’t want to wait until next summer and I really
can’t afford to have it done in the USA.<br><br>If
anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

I Can’t Seem To Stop Binging!!! :(

Thursday, September 23rd, 2004

Hey Everyone! I have such a MAJOR problem here!
I’m currently a Pre-Op patient. I’m taking all my
tests that are required for the surgery. Also, I’m
doing my best in exercising. <br><br>The only problem I
have is, I’ve been REAL stressed out and depressed
lately. That it’s driving me INSANE!!!! For one, I
haven’t heard from MediCal yet for such a long time for
my approval. I know one thing, if I can’t have this
surgery, I don’t know what else to do. I might as well
die. I no longer want to live as a 503 lbs. lady!
:(<br><br>Two, I’ve been trying to stay on my diet. BUT IT’S SO
D@MN HARD!!! Especially when you see your favorite
food laying around. And you have people who live with
you, and who don’t have to lose weight.<br><br>The
only good thing is that I’ve stoped drinking caffine

Approved :)

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004

Hi ya all,<br>Just to let you know, I have been
approved by my new insurance. I am so excited. I went and
had pre-op labs drawn today. I still have several
other tests to do before the doctor will set a date.
Hopefully, I can get schedualed before the end of the year
:).<br><br>Dottie<br>pre-op

Looking into surgery

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004

Hi everyone<br><br>I am so happy I found this
group. I have decided to seriously look into having the
Laprascopic Gastric Bypass (if they do it here in Canada) and
I was wondering if there were any people on this
list from Canada. I would be interested in speaking
with someone who could tell me of some Dr.s that have
good reputations and also the cost of this
operation.<br><br>I am 35 and currently 260 lbs & 5′7… I have tried
everything and at this point in my life I am just FED UP. I
have put myself on a VERY restricted diet of 2 rice
cakes, 2 cans of broth soup and 2 cans of diet pop and
in 6 weeks I have lost 4.5 lbs. VERY
UPSETTING.<br><br>I broke my foot 6 months ago and it is not healing
well so I may have to have it broken and pinned. So
right now I can’t work out which I’m sure if I did it

change of insurance

Tuesday, September 21st, 2004

I had approval through my old insurance. Now, I
have to wait for my new insurance to approve it. It
went into effect Nov. 1st. I am hoping that there
won’t be a problem. I would certainly like to get this
done by the end of the year. I guess I am back in a
holding pattern.<br><br>Dottie<br>pre-op?
