I highly doubt your staples did break.. I’d think
that woudl cause unbearable pain, as well as a very
rapid appetite increase..

I do know the staples
are supposted to show up when x-rayed. Your DR should
be able to do a quick X-ray and check.

As far
as insurance, if they did indeed break, insurance
should cover it. It would be going in to "repair" a
previous surgery, not a brand new surgery.

Mark

Why do you think that your staples are broken? If
this is the case, you should contact your doctor. I
would think that an X-ray of your stomach while you
drink the contrast material would show if the staples
have broken.
In regards to insurance covering it,
you need to check your "Explaination of Benefits."
Some insurances will not cover anything related to
gastric by-pass, including complications that result from
a previous surgery. There is a chance that this may
be over-turned with an appeal if considered a
medical necessity.
I hope this is helpful. Good luck
and God bless.

Dottie
Pre-op Duodenal

If you had the type of gastric bypass where your
stomach is stapled into two sections, but not actually
cut (transected) into two pieces, then it is entirely
possible that your staple line could be broken
(disrupted). A doctor could tell you for sure with a swallow
test or a scope. Some people experience pain from acid
reflux when their staple line disrupts, other people
just find that they can eat a lot more and start
gaining weight. It’s better to figure this out quickly
instead of waiting till you gain a bunch of weight. Get
to your surgeon soon, and if you do have a
disruption, the doctor can write a request to your insurance
to get it approved.
Good Luck! Lynn

Wow a car backed over me and my dr told me my staples could not be broken this
way? What kind of accident did you get into?

I was on a 4-wheeler and lost control of it. I
was going to turn over and I jumped off so I wouldn’t
get caught under it and landed flat on my back in the
middle of a dirt/rock road. The impact turned me over on
my stomach. I hit my head, split it open and was
knocked unconscious. I was out for about 1-1.5 minutes
and have no memory of about a 15-20 minute time
period. I was losing weight up until this time then I
started gaining it back. The surgeon sent me for an upper
GI and part of my staple line has come loose. It’s
the only explanation. I wasn’t doing anything that I
wasn’t supposed to. He’s only had one other paitient
have their staples come loose, but that person was
constantly drinking carbonated drinks and stretched it
apart.

I met one woman who ended up with a disrupted
staple line after a snowmobile accident, so it is
definitely possible. But, you can also have a staple line
disruption anywhere from a few months to several years after
surgery without doing ANYTHING wrong. Some doctors will
try to blame it on the patient because they don’t
want to face the reality that sometimes things just
happen that are totally out of our control. No matter
how many lines of staples you have, if your stomach
is not transected, you can have a disruption without
doing ANYTHING wrong. Good Luck!

If your only symptom is weight gain..this can be caused by
overeating gradually stretching the stomach..plus it is normal for
people to stop losing weight and gain back a portion after 18-24
months. Also, consuming high calorie foods that are not
filling..such as alcohol, icecream, soda, etc can lead to weight
gain.
