Dumb Doctors

Tuesday, November 30th, 2004

I can believe he said that to you. As a nurse who works with
doctors every day I know Not all doctors are tactful and many of them
are just plain dumb when it comes to relating to people. As most of
us know many people are ignorant when it comes to what heavy people go
through and most people know very little about this procedure or why
it is neccessary.

A few weeks ago one of the nursing supervisors at work commented on
how much weight I have lost and I told her that I had lost 33 lbs (at
that time)and that I had to lose 100 lbs because I was planning to
have a gastric bypass. She was very negative about the surgery and
told me I shouldn’t have it. She too recounted a horror story to me
and said Why don’t you just keep doing what you’re doing? I didn’t
even try to explain because I already knew it was useless to try to
educate her.

Divorce rate among post op patients

Tuesday, November 30th, 2004

Karen,
I hope noone has misunderstood my message about the high divorce rate
among people who have had this surgery. I am deeply committed to
my husband and my marriage. I have been through a divorce so I can not
say it is never an option, but I have to say my husband loved me
at 300 lbs before we were married and he loves me just as much now at
463. He, like your spouse, wants me to be happy and healthy and has
been completely supportive of me having this procedure if it is what
I want.

It is a fact that many large women settle for whatever comes along in
the way of men and often find themselves trapped in abusive and
unhealthy relationships(been there done that for 14 years with my
first marriage). Once the weight is lost self esteem increases,
depression often decreases, and women realize they don’t have to

Airplane Question

Monday, November 29th, 2004

Okay, I’m hoping (fingers crossed) that my surgery date will be
sometime in mid-June. How long should I wait before getting on an
airplane? Is mid-August too soon? Has anyone else encountered this?

Home Stretch

Sunday, November 28th, 2004

Well, I’ve been approved with the insurance, and have all of
my "final" appointments made. Now, all I have to do is wait, see the
doctors, and then make my date for surgery. Ugh, waiting is the
hardest part.

Hi, Yesterday I changed my appointment. It is for May 23rd instead of April
29th.
My husbands attitude changed positively immediately. I think he felt
powerless in the decision making process. I’ve given him a fig leaf, and he
seems happy with it for now. He feels he had some say in this. He needed
some sense of control.

I am not trying to minimize the issues. My husband has in the last two weeks
said on 2 different occasions "You’re going to lose weight and leave me in a
year".

I have heard that divorce is very high in our demographic group (I guess we
are a little demographic group), but as a person with very strong religious
beliefs divorce is not an option for either of us. That’s not to say we
are’nt in for a rocky road.

Hi,I am sorry to hear the problems in your family. Have you taken
your husband to a support group meeting with you or perhaps included
him in your appointments? Go to this website www.wlscenter.com and in
the left column under To all "Significant Others" is a letter that
you may want to print. It is pretty touching. I was having a few
problems with a friend and this helped. Perhaps you can try to
explain it as "that even though you love me the way I am and I love
you too it is difficult to love someone else when you are not happy
with yourself.:) Wishing you the best. Bobette

I am having the lapRNY. My BMI is 46 and I am diabetic. I am still getting
flack from my husband who is a Fat Admirer. Never have been able to
understand it. But he keeps asking me to postpone my surgery to give him
more time to adjust. I’ve told him no. Rebecca

Chewable vitamins on sale at Cub

Thursday, November 25th, 2004

I went shopping today for per/post surgery essentials and found a great deal
on Cub Brand Chewable children’s vitamins. The complete formula contains
18mg of iron, and 100% of the adult rda for most vitamins and minerals per 1
tablet, with less than 1 gram of carbs. They taste decent…and I think the
animal shapes are cute..:-) They have other formulas besides the
complete..but this formula contains the most iron and vitamins. For under
$2.50 a bottle, you can get a 2 month supply for under $5.00. I wanted to
share this find for those of you who need chewable vitamins. I found these
at the Fridley cub, but I assume the price is the same at other Cubs also.
