Getting a Little Angry

My father is dead set against me having RNY. He wants to me go on
the Paleo diet…has anyone else done this? It’s kind of like a
super-crazy Aitkins diet, all lean meat, fruits and veggies. No
dairy, grains, or preservatives. I’m just upset that I have to make
some "last ditch effort". My heart isn’t in this, I’ve tried the
Aitkins diet already. At what point is it acceptable for someone to
say, "hello, I’ve tried all of this and look at me. Obviously isn’t
working. Do I have your permission to go onto something else?"

Shoot, the definition of insanity is when you keep trying the same
thing and expecting a different result!

First off … you do not have to ‘make some "last ditch effort" ‘
unless YOU feel it is necessary. Even if you lose weight on this
diet the odds are STACKED against you maintaining that weight loss -
and yoyo dieting is detrimental to your health. Several people
encouraged me just to try again … try harder … not to take this
drastic step … blah blah blah. Well … I had the surgery
    11/28/01. My pre-op weight was 297 and today I weigh 231 - this is
my lowest weight, after many struggles with various diets, in 10
years. These 66 pounds are gone forever … not like diets of the
past where the weight returns when you tire of the diet. AND the
weight is still coming off with little effort on my part … just
follow the rules of the pouch. Good luck - I just bet he will come
and visit you in the hospital. Donna

It can be so hard to press on in your wls journey when you don’t have the
support of the people who mean the most to you. You will probably have to come
to a point where you can tell your dad how much you love him and respect him but
that this is your decision and he either needs to accept and support you or at
least respect you enough to realize that he’s said his peace and it’s time to
put a cork in it. I had a very dear friend who was so against me having wls
that she actually refused to call me in the hospital after my surgery. She got
kinda mean about it to be honest. I was hurt so deeply. It’s several months
later now and she did eventually come around but until she did, it hurt so much.
I hope you can find the strength to press on and do what you know in your heart
is right for YOU. This surgery has changed my life dramatically and now those
who were opposed see the changes in me and are finally supportive. :)

Thanks for your support, guys. I just feel like even if I do get the
surgery now, it’s tainted. That my decision, although good for me,
has let down everyone else. ugh. I think I just need to move ;)
