Rebecca,
I have to tell you that my surgeon says in every support group meeting
that divorce is a side effect of this surgery. He is dead serious
when he says this too. His own study is that something like 46% of
his patients who were married when they had the surgery end up getting
divorced. Especially those under 40 who have it.
You may not want to hear this. It is something that most surgeons do
not address but maybe they should.
Whether to postone your surgery is a personal decision that only you
can make. I hope you weigh your options carefully. Good luck!

I know that I had an OPEN RNY because that is the only surgery my
insurance would pay for. I know that alot of doctors will not do the
LAP RNY on some patients that are REALLY OBESE because of the risk of
staying under anesthesia so long. The open takes on average about
2 to 2 1/2 hours…the lap 5-6 hours. Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Sharon

Sharon, I had lap RNY and was out of surgery in just over two hours.
Depends on how experienced the surgeon is really. If he/she has done
400 or 500 procedures, I can’t imagine it taking six hours, unless of
course they run into a complication.

I have posted once before. My name is Kristina. I am 22 yrs. old. I weigh 254
and I am 5′2". I have a BMI of 45.3. I am scheduled for surgery on Wednesday,
August 28th at 9:30 am. I am having the surgery done at a very well known
hospital in Boston Mass. I am not scared at all about the surgery or of how
great I will look after the surgery. I am scared of spending the night in a
hospital! Nothing else during this process has scared me. I started my
"Journey" back in November of 2001. It has taken that long to go through the
proper channels of being seen by doctors. My insurance is paying for
everything. So I am very happy for that. If anyone has any comforting words
of wisdom about hospital or about this process in general. Please respond.
Thank you,

Hi… I recently had the Silastic Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (July 3) and was
just wanting to talk with other people going through the same experiences I’m
going through right now. I’ve already lost 34 lbs. and feel great. I weighed
382 lbs. before the surgery… I now weigh 349. I’ve recently been experiencing
the side effects of the surgery - "throwing up" and just wanted some support to
get me through these rough times. It’s been a major lifestyle change for me and
just wanted to know how others are coping.

Hi,
I had gastric bypass Rounex-y procedure done on May 1st. I know the feeling of
nausea and throwing up. I have had 3 upper Gi Endoscopy’s done because of it to
dilate the stoma to make it easier to eat. It gets very frustrating. I have lost
68 lbs. so far and that is what keeps me going. I can eat a little better right
now. My hardest thing to still eat is meat. I tried eating a little bite of
chicken last night and vomited several times. But, the soft foods go down
better. I should be eating more than I am. I am trying to drink protein shakes
twice daily to supplement my food intake. So far "Myoplex" premixed from GNC
healthfoods tastes the best to me. I know some people just seem to take longer
to heal inside than others. Apparently I am one of them. Sometimes I just wish I
could sit and eat anything without discomfort, but I also would never want to be
as heavy as I was again. So by continually losing it gives me the encouragement
to go on. My husband just said today if he would have known I was going to have
so many problems he would have tried to talk me out of the surgery, but as much
as I would like to eat normally again I would never want to regain that weight.
Just realize, it has only been about 5 weeks and things will start getting
better.

I watched this show on tv and thought this was very interesting. M
Eating Less and Living Longer
We know that exercise … a good diet … and a positive attitude about life can
make us look and feel better, and help us live longer. In 1776, the average life
expectancy in this country was 35. Now, it’s 77.
But we still get older and die. Some scientists, however, believe we could live
decades longer if we did one thing: eat less — a lot less.
Extensive research with all sorts of animals has shown that significantly
reducing the number of calories we eat could lengthen our lives. Caloric
restriction, CR for short, involves cutting back our caloric intake by 30
percent. "We have observed that the animals on caloric restriction live longer,
and that they develop diseases later, if at all, and that biologically they stay
younger longer than the normally fed animals," said Dr. Richard Weindruch of the
University of Wisconsin, who has been studying CR since 1975.
Halfway around the world there’s strong evidence that cutting back on calories
works. People on the Japanese island of Okinawa eat fewer calories than the
typical Japanese, and up to 40 percent less than the average American. They have
the highest proportion of people over 100 anywhere in the world.
The typical Okinawan diet is low in calories, low in salt and very high in
vegetables. It also includes limited amounts of lean meats and some fish,
according to Dr. Bradley Willcox, who has been studying Okinawans’ diets for
more than 25 years.
Most Americans balk at the notion of cutting calories so dramatically to
lengthen their lives. Nearly three-quarters of Americans in an ABCNEWS poll say
going on a very strict diet — eating one-third fewer calories — in order to live
longer isn’t worth it.
Knowing how hard it is to cut calories, different groups of scientists are
working on drugs that would allow us to eat the same amount of food, while
fooling our bodies into thinking we are eating less. The result: we would
achieve the same benefits of calorie restriction, without the sacrifice.

Kristina, As long as you do your best not to throw up, try a little sip, nibble
and tiny swollow at a time. I do not have a desire to eat eather(isn’t that
grand). I know that I need the protein drinks to keep my hair from falling out
and I pulverise my pills and mix them with some vanilla pudding(sugar free). No
not appatising in the least. I had this surgery to add QUILATY to my life and I
am determand to do so. Please try. Maureen

Maureen,
I almost threw up yesterday after I had a slice of turkey. I stopped
myself from it. I like to eat yogurt, and slices of cheese. Funny thing is, I
hated cheese before surgery. I tried chicken, and I couldn’t eat more than
one bite. I hate carnation instant breakfast. That stuff is so gross. I have
been eating tuna fish. That tastes great. I feel like I need this with lots
of flavor to want to eat it. I find it strange. I am happy, though, because I
am seeing results. Other people are seeing the results. I have lost 31 lb. so
far. Almost 3 weeks post op. Well, gotta get going. Hope everyone is well.

My name is Zandrea. I had gastrobypass surgery about 1and a half years ago. To
this day I have lost 140 pounds. My problem is that I am haveing a real hard
time eating the way I am supposed to eat. I mean I am not eat at all like I
used to but I am still eating way to much. I get sick and throw up all the
time. Why can’t I stop doing this? I know when I eat to much that is what is
going to happen but I just can’t help myself. My 7 year old son even gets on me
for eating to much. One night we were eating out and after eating about half my
plate he said "Mom, you know what will happen if you eat to much, so stop."
That’s real bad when my little boy has to say that ya know. Also, I just can’t
seem to find the engery to walk like the doctor told me. The truth is I was
told to walk 3 miles aday and well I have only walked 1 mile one time since my
surgery. I hope that someone understands me and maybe has some advice for me.
Thanks for listening!

Zandria, congratulations on your great weight loss! I’ve heard of two
solutions that might work. I personally measure all my food into a
half-cup measure, and that makes up a meal for me. I tend to stick to
proteins, pretty much, or proteins and cooked veges. Another system is
the 4-2-1 system someone mentioned, 4 bites of protein, 2 bites of veges
and 1 bite of starchy carbs. I find that if I get started on carbs,
it’s katie-bar-the-door. I just can’t stop. A bag of fritos is calling
for me now, but I am refusing to go to the store and buy it <G>. I did
take a loaf of french bread and slice it into 1/4 inch slices, then
brushed some melted butter on each piece and baked in the oven for 20-25
minutes at 300 until they got hard. That’s what I use for my "bread" -
I’ll have one slice with my single egg for breakfast, and it doesn’t
seem to start the carb craving.
We can definitely outeat our pouch. <sigh> It’s only a tool, and not
"the answer."
I just ordered a series of videotapes called "Walk Away the Pounds."
They were highly recommended on another list, and you can find them at
Amazon.com, or ebay, etc. Apparently they only require a little space
in front of your TV to use. You can walk a mile in 15 minutes, or 2
miles in 30, etc. I don’t know if something like that might work for
you. Heck, I don’t know if it might work for me, but I’m going to try.
I find it difficult to exercise, too. Even the Richard Simmons tapes
are too much for me <G>.
Good luck, Zandria.

all the time. Why can’t I stop doing this? I know when I eat to much that
is what is going to happen but I just can’t help myself. My 7 year old son
even gets on me for eating to much. One night we were eating out and after
eating about half my plate he said "Mom, you know what will happen if you
eat to much, so stop." That’s real bad when my little boy has to say that
ya know. Also, I just can’t seem to find the engery to walk like the doctor
told me. The truth is I was told to walk 3 miles aday and well I have only
walked 1 mile one time since my surgery. I hope that someone understands me
and maybe! has some advice for me. Thanks for listening!

Dear Nancy,
I myself contemplated gastric bypass for years before finally deciding
that I wasn’t going to be able to lose my weight on my own without aid. I
look at my gastric bypass as an aid to helping me to lose weight.
The mortality rate that I’ve seen is 1 in 200 die which comes out to be
.5%. I’m personally a believer that statistics are just numbers that can
be made to support either side of a belief. So I myself don’t place much
emphasis on statistical numbers/rates.
I’m glad I finally took control of my eating and had the surgery which

will help to add many years of living. The many years I now look forward to
are going to be different than the ones I’d have looked forward to had I not
had surgery. I am probably even going to gain some self esteem about myself
as I start feeling and looking better.
Good luck and congratulations on taking your first step in the surgerical
process.

It also depends on your doc. Mine has lost 2 in 1200, which is even
less. Most problems are caused by the co-morbidities themselves,
and the longer you wait the worse the co-morbidities get.
Bottom line, though, is that you have to make your own decisions,
based on your circumstances.

Hi Nancy,
I can understand your concern. I myself was scared to have surgery, because
of a bad experience years ago. When I first decided to have it one of my
family members was unhappy she said she would never elect to go have someone
cutting on her (she is 350+#) I thought about what she said and I told her
I would rather have a controlled situation than one day having the Dr. tell
me he had to cut off my leg because of diabetes or my having heart failure
and them cutting my chest open to try to save me. Yes there is a high
mortality rate but when you stop to think about the group of people this
rate is being taken from all morbidly obese, most with co-morbitities that
have already done some damage to their bodies and the fact that if they
don’t do anything they will die a slow death and there last years will be
spent a prisoner in their own body. The chance was worth it to me I am 45,
still in relativly good health, and tired of feeling like I was 90. I had
my surgery Lap RNY a month ago Monday I have lost 31# had no problems,
haven’t even thrown up once and I feel good, and I have energy. My one
suggestion is to have faith in your surgeon, I went to a Dr. who could do it
fast, cheap, and wanted to rush me through, I couldn’t see myself on the
other side of surgery and did not get a good feeling from my surgeon. I
kept researching and finally I met a Dr. I felt good about with lots of
experience, he was higher priced than the first Dr. but I felt confident. I
will gladly pay more money for his skills after all we are talking about my
life not a good buy at the bargain basement. Good luck with your journey I
can only hope you have a great experience like I did.

Actually, the morbidity rate from the surgery is no higher than for
other surgeries, and for some surgeons way below the national average.
This surgery is the greatest gift I’ve given myself.

Just wanted everyone to know that I finally got the nerve to call my
insurance company, United Healthcare, to see if they had received all
my paperwork from my surgeon. They said not yet, so I asked if they
could check my policy to see if wls is covered. IT IS!!! Mind you
this is only verbal confirmation, but let me tell you, it felt great
to hear something positive.

if you are calling customer service, ask if you cant speak to a care
corodinator-i kept calling the number on the back of my insurance
card for 4 months and they kept saying that it was still in review,
finally they gave me the number for the care cord in my area, i
called there and i ended up having to have my drs office fax the
paperwork to them, once i did that it only took 2 weeks, so just make
sure that you are speaking to the right dept, i would hate for you to
go through what i did, good luck

I want to take this time to thank everyone for their support and
input. I appreciate all the replies I get whenever I post. I’m very
luck to have found people like you who really care and understand and
are willing to help in anyway they can. You all have been a wonderful
force in my life dealing with the surgery. I’m still waiting for
insurance approval. I have United Healthcare. They received all my
medical records and letters on April 10th. There is still no decision
yet and I’m really getting down. I’m trying to take my own advice and
keep my chin up, but sometimes, waiting like this, gets very hard. I
want this surgery so much. I need it. Whenever I start thinking I’ll
never have wls I come online and you all make me feel better. Just
wanted you to know how I’m feeling and how much I treasure all of you.
Thanks!

WELL….Let me tell you about ANOTHER hurdle in my continued wls
journey. My papers were received by my insurance company on 4/10.
I’ve been calling EVERY single day since then to find out if I was
approved. In my insurance policy it said that this type of surgery
is covered, but as we all know, you have to have that
magically "approved" letter in your hot little hands before you can
continue on your wls journey. I call my insurance company today.
(I’ve got a list of names of all the reps i talked to at the
insurance company, so i know when ones were nice and willing to
REALLY check on things for me) I talked to a Jerri who is really one
of the nicest people I have ever dealt with concerning my insurance
or anything for that matter. She is a true gem. She told me that
they needed some additional info before a decision could be made. So
I called the wls program I’m going thru and asked them did they know
what was going on. I was told that they were just trying to call
me. Apparently my insurance company wants me to see the surgeon
first before any decision can be made. Now i’m thinking to myself,
shouldn’t the program i’m going thru, having dealt with lots of
insurance companies, have know that??!!! I try not to get mad (i’m
at work) and I asked what should i do. I was told that i needed to
get in to see the surgeon asap. BUT GUESS WHAT???!!! NO OPENINGS
UNTIL 6/4 and i’ll have to have a referral from my pcp. BUT GUESS
WHAT???!!!! MY PCP IS OUT OF TOWN UNTIL 5/5 AND THAT 6/4 APPT DATE
WITH THE SURGEON MAY BE GONE BY THE TIME MY PCP HAS HIS NURSE TYPE
THE LETTER ON 5/5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I’M AM SOOOOOO UPSET IT HAS BEEN VERY HARD NOT TO CRY AT WORK!!!!!
I’ve had the psyh eval and passed. I have my pcp’s approval letter
and his letter saying i’m a good candidate for the surgery. JUST ONE
IMPORTANT THING THAT’S MISSING……………I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE
FREAKING SURGEON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’M TIRED. I’M VERY TIRED AND I’M HAVING A HARD TIME KEEPING MY
DIABETES AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE UNDER CONTROL. *SIGH* I feel
like giving up. I swear I do.
I’m tired.

Is your PCP’s office staff there? Given the letter you have from their
boss, would they be willing to go ahead and do a referral for you for the
consult? I know my PCP office routinely refers me for my mammogram without
the doc’s having to sign a piece of paper. It just goes into their computer
so that BCBS expects it to happen. (The computers are all hooked to BCBS)
Or the office calls the surgeon and asks for an appointment for you - making
a referral that way. Don’t lose hope!
Pam
January 13th, 2006 at 3:57 pm
Thanks Becky.
I’m very angry at the program people. I could have had the referral in no time.
My pcp supports wls. I just saw him monday and he was asking how the process
was going. I could have had the referral done weeks ago.

Well group…Here I am again! This is Brenda from Missouri. The one
that vented yesterday about my insurance wanting me to see the surgeon
first before they will approve the surgery.
I just wanted everyone to know…..I FOUGHT LIKE HELL TODAY!! I
called the wls program director and DEMANDED, yes, DEMANDED that the
original letter my pcp sent to them supporting me for the surgery be
used to get that 6/4 date to see the surgeon. I then call my pcp
office (remember I told you he was out of town at some convention) and
I asked, nicely but firmly that this is an emergency and I needed that
referral asap. The head office nurse said she’d see what she could
do, but it doesn’t look like any referral could be done until monday,
5/5, when my pcp came back to the office. I told her ok. 2 hours
later she calls me at work and said that she put in an emergency call
to my pcp and told him the whole situation. HE TOOK TIME OUT AND
WROTE A LETTER OF REFERRAL, SIGNED IT, AND FAXED IT TO HIS
NURSE!!!!!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE HE TOOK TIME OUT OF HIS SCHEDULE, OUT OF
TOWN, TO DO THAT FOR ME!!!! She called me and told me that she was
faxing me the referral. In 15 mins. i had it the referral and i was
faxing it over to the wls program director!!!!!!!! (note to self…I
have to remember to send that wonderful, caring nurse a thank you
letter first thing tomorrow)
I GOT THE 6/4 DATE TO SEE THE SURGEON!!!!!!!!! wooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!
I even called my insurance company AGAIN (lol) to make sure the
surgery is covered. It is if deemed medically necessary. IT IS!!!!
I want to thank each and everyone of you for your support, e-mail
encouragements, and prayers. You guys really got me going. I am very
blessed to have found you guys, and I thank you from the bottom of my
heart. I thank God I found you.

Brenda, take a deep breath. The only one important in this decision-making
process is you. And it has to be your decision. You have to weigh the pros
and the cons, look at the lifestyle changes you will be making, and then
make your own decision. Something tells me that they wouldn’t ask you to
help them make health decisions - why do they feel qualified to tell you
what to do?
Most people don’t know about the surgery. Really know about it. Many have
relatives or friends who "had it" - but what did they have? RNY’s, MGB’s,
older stomach stapling, DSs? How much did their docs know about follow-up?
Did the person really plan on how they were going to take care of themselves
post-op or did they just expect the surgery to do it all for them?
And then there are those who will be upset if you lose the weight - and
you’ll have to get used to that, to.
It’s not all guaranteed hunky dory in the relationship world, when you lose
the weight. But I gotta ask you, how many 300 lb 70 year olds do you see
walking the malls?
*sigh* Well I made the mistake of telling a few co workers that I

Hey Girl,
Do not be dissuaded!! Let them know that you shared this information
because you trusted that they would be supportive but if not then stow it.
Feel good about your decision to improve you health and let no one take that
away from you. I started my journey about 18 months and am still very
determined to have the surgery. Yesterday is when I told my 3 grown
daughters. The opinions of others are sometimes valuable but they are only
part of our decision process. We individually make the final choice. You
can be sure that you have all the support of this group, especially mine.
Stay strong.

Dear Brenda start junmping again. Sometimes your co workers could be jealous
and afraid you’ll look better than them. They may not be concern that you are
trying to do this for your helath also, I was happy everytime I read your
notices. I am happy for you , lets pray and keep strong I also need your

discuss this with them anymore, they will never give you the stamp of
approval. God Bless. Anita

birthday :)I feel so much healthy and happier and believe me it shows, people
comment about it on a daily basis!! I no longer have pain in my feet, back,
knees and no longer take any medicine
and I try to drink as much water as I can get in. The best thing you can do for
yourself is…….walk, walk, walk, and drink drink drink

Brenda,Like Pam said, dont let anyone rain on your parade! You are going to
find people that are not going to support you no matter what. I have been truly
blessed….my co-workers have been very supportive, but the bottom line
was……they knew this was my decision and my mind was made up due to the fact
that I was scared I was going to drop dead of a heart attack at work. I am a
correctional Sergeant in the State Prison and believe me packing around that
kind of weight is very dangerous, in more ways than one :)You made this decision
for you, and you need to stay focused, and remember you have all of us here in
your corner pulling for you!! There are going to be people that are going to be
jealous of you, but just overlook them and when its all said and done the people
that you hear cheering for you are truly your friend!!May God bless you as you
continue down the path to a much healthier and happy life!Carolyn

Can anyone calm me down again? I was really doing ok about this whole

Hi Everyone:
I had my surgery on 5-22-03. Everything went well but I have a few questions
for anyone who can help. First I have sharp pains in my ribs. When I get out of
bed or move in different directions. Any suggestions?
I also have a two year old dog who is very agressive. Can I walk him yet?
I appreciate any help anyone can give me.
Thank you

i had my surgery on 5/5/03 and i went by the dr on fri and i have
already lost 41 pounds! i cant believe it! i have 1 question though,
ever since i had it done, i have not been hungry, thats not the
problem, for the past couple of days, i have felt sick to my stomach
and every time i eat or drink something it makes me feel worse, do i
have a bug or is something else wrong?
February 12th, 2006 at 5:23 pm
I had serious pain in my ribs after my surgery too. My doctor explained to me
that they are very "rough" on your rib cage during the surgery because they need
to get in there to get at your stomach, etc. That could be why you are having
pain. But, make sure you tell your doctor because pain in/around your ribs
could also be pnuemonia - I got it after surgery, so I know it’s a possibility.
Did your doctor have you doing breathing exercises after surgery?

Do you throw up everything? A certain amount of nausea is understandable,
given our new tummies and the fact that we’re putting adult food in them.
Nausea can be caused by several things….
1) your pouch just doesn’t like that food. Try it again later
2) you might be developing a stricture of the stoma - (narrowing of the
outlet from the pouch to the intestine - it does occur, usually around 4
weeks, and is caused usually by scar tissue. Handled by having and
endoscopy where they insert a little balloon and stretch it back open)
3) eating too much or too big a bite.
The 3rd *usually* doesn’t cause nausea, but vomiting - but you can get some
nausea there.
4) the beginning of an ulcer, which is usually handled by scripts like
prevacid and so on.
You’re coming up on 4 weeks, which is the time a stricture develops usually,
if it’s going to. If you continue to have problems, after you’re sure
you’re going slowly with your food and chewing thoroughly, I’d talk with
your surgeon. Don’t get dehydrated, and don’t let a possible ulcer go too
long. Fixing them up front is a lot easier than fixing them once they’ve
gotten bad.

hi luanne try and slide to the edge of the bed and let your feet hang off and
slowly raise your upper body to a sitting position using your legs as
leverage. this will take some of the strain off your back and abdominal muscles.
hope this helps.

For those of you who are about to have surgery or are considering it, I have a
little personal victory I’d like to share. I’ve lost 56 pounds since my sugery
on March 3rd and hope to lose about 50-60 more. I finally had to break down and
buy a few pairs of pants yesterday because all of mine are falling off me. So,
I went to a "regular size" store (Eddie Bauer) and grabbed about 6 pairs of
pants to try on. EVERY SINGLE PAIR FIT ME!! As I walked through the store, I
didn’t feel like people were staring at me wondering how I could fit in "regular
size" clothes. After years of only buying plus sizes and getting funny looks
when I browsed through "regular sizes" it was an AWESOME feeling! Just had to
share and let people know this is one little thing to look forward to.
Good luck!

Hi Jen,
I dream to experience what you just described. I am getting closer to having
the surgery and can’t wait for the day when I can shop in the front of the store
instead of looking for the plus sizes in the middle or rear. Honey, I would
almost skip through town in the nude if I could just tie my shoes. I wish you
all the best and those like you.

Now that I have insurance approval, I’ve been scheduled for the pre op
testing. Next Friday I have some type of Cardio workup, and a chest
x-ray. The following Tuesday I go for a pulmonary function test.
Soon afterwards I’ll have some type of gallbladder test and a doppler
of my legs. If anyone has gone thru similar testing, could you please
give me a heads up on what to expect?
Thanks in advance!

Hi.
Well I am a newbie and pretty stupid when it comes to doing things the UK way as
I am american..but nevermind
OKAY..here it goes…I found out about this Roux en Y surgery from my mom and a
few mates in the states…I have the BMI of 47.2 and weight about 19 1/2 stone.
I know nothing about the band surgery or any of the others..
I am disabled, stay at home housewife…
About 4 weeks ago I went to see a gastro doctor who advised that I had a heital
hernia and because of my size no person would touch me..I then introduced the
idea of having weight loss surgery…the consultant thought EXCELLENT idea..
Thusly he told me he would write a note to my GP and see what could be done..
well 2 weeks later I was sitting in GP’s office having a converstation. GP and
Consultant thought this needed to be done and I should seek privately doing
this..I have benedin health insurance threw my husband who works at Royal
mail..it is a back up insurance in case the NHS wait is too long and surgeries
or proceedures need to be done quicker then the NHS does them..
I phoned Benedin health insurance a week or so ago and told them what was
what..they said No we do not cover this type of surgery..we do not cover
"cosmetic surgery" I said this isn’t cosmetic this is medical…which they then
said NO we still do not cover this.
SOOOOO..I then went back to GP who phoned me on monday…and said got an
Idea..had write a note to Benedin asking them to concider and reconcider the
option of making this covered.
NOW…a few problems have popped up
1. We are seriously in debt and are skint…and no one will give us a loan…
2. NHS wait could be as long as 3 years..give or take sometime.
GP is sending me to a Encronologist…(Sp?) to make sure there isn’t any other
underling medical problems..as I have a bucket load…which makes this surgery
even that much more important..
Mick advised I type my whole story out…so I could get advise…
We wrote Benedin today…and see what happens…GP says if Refused..then he will
write them and to the NHS advising that this is an urgent case needs to be delt
with..
I have a strong heart…low blood pressure..low blood sugar…had a stroke..have
arthritis..and probably suffer from Sleep apnia as well as Husband complains I
snore. I have cerebal palsy..mild form which doesn’t help my mobilty much..I
have a heital hernia…should I go on?
I’ve had a hystroctomy..I have pancreas problems..I am semi incontinet….need I
still go on….
That’s my story folks….sorry it was long.
Cynda.

I’M GOING TO HAVE SURGERY ON 10-23 AND I’M NOW REALLY
NERVOUS ABOUT THE SURGERY. IS THIS NORMAL BEFORE SURGERY? IT DOESN’T
HELP THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE AROUND ME LATELY HAVE DIED SO I THINK THAT
THE RESENT DEATH HAVE ME A LITTLE ON EDGE AS WELL. ALSO MY MOTHER
KIND OF FREAKING OUT ABOUT THE SURGERY. I’M TRYING TO STAY IN A GOOD
MIND SET. I 25 YEAR OLD 5′5 AND WEIGH 316. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD PROBLES
WITH MY WEIGHT. I’M EXCIDED TO HAVE MY SURGERY. I HAVE ONLY 16 MORE
DAYS. HAS ANYBODY HAD THIS SURGERY AT TRAVIS OR HAD DR. DUSTIN
ZIEROLD. I DO HAVE A FEW QUESTION TO ANYONE HOW MAY OF HAD HIM AS A
DOC. SUCH AS DID THEY LIKE HIM OR WHAT HIS BED SIDE MANNER LIKE? AND
AN OTHER INFO YOU MANY HAVE.
June 22nd, 2006 at 5:52 pm
Olivia,
I understand your fear. I am getting closer to surgery as well. But not till
the end of November. I think that hearing about deaths have prompted me to make
the decision to have the surgery. I plan to follow all my doctors
recommendations and I think I should come out okay. It didn’t help to have him
tell me to write up a will though. But this is common practice with any surgery.
Good luck with your surgery. I’m sure you will be fine. Be thankful that you
can do this. I am! I just wish my sister had insurance and could have it done
as well. She is heavier than I. I worry about her.

Hi!! I´m new in the group and I had the lap band surgery about 7
weeks ago. I´m not sure what type of surgery you´re going to have
but I just wanted to tell you that it´s very normal to be nervous an
afraid, I was too before the surgery but I don´t regret at all. The
thing is that I eat a lot and have a lot of cravings, I don´t stay
in diets for very long ( the longest I´ve lasted is 3 weeks) and I
LOVE TO EAT!!.. So a friend from a friend recommended Dr. Verboonen,
he´s a surgeon in Tijuana, Mexico. Their service is great they have
a package that takes care of the transportation needs, the airfair
and all of the other fees, they also connect you with a financial
institution so you can pay for the surgery if you´re insurance
doesn´t cover it. With the help of the nutritionist I´ve managed to
loose 18 pounds and I FEEL GREAT, but I still have a lot of weight
to loose … close to 160 punds .. but I´m just taking it one day at
a time… Have a very nice day!!!….

I’ve really really really tried to stick to the slim fast diet, doing 2 drinks a
day and a senceable dinner… But haven’t lost an ounce.
IF anything I’ve gained 4 pounds.
I’ve cut out drinking sugar pop, butter, and most fats that I can cut out.
Eating loads of salad , feel like a rabbit.
Small quaties..like 1 cup of pasta and 4 ounces of meat..I’ve been weighting
everything out and reaaaally watching my diet…I thought having a Thanksgiving
social would put me right over the edge..but you know what..It didn’t I knew
what I had to do and I did it.
Last time I chatted to the obese clinic doctor he wanted me to go on 4 pintes of
slim milk a day and nothing more.
I haven’t honestly kept a food diary, I hope he doesn’t scold me for that..but I
just didn’t feel it was nessacary.
I go to the phyciotrist on the 11th of Dec and back to obese clinic on the 16th
of Dec.
I’m sorta frustrated due to I’ve had this endless cold and blood pressue has
been rock bottom…meaning 70/40…. I’m american living in England..I’m hoping
to get this surgery..but I must tell you my confidence about it is slim to none.
Any Advice?

Slimfast has a lot of sugar in it. Check the carb count. It will make you
hungrier.
Pam in Niceville
September 21st, 2006 at 12:42 am
Well , Pam, it’s a bit late for me to try to check it now, Appointment with the
Doc is 2 weeks away. Unfortunatly I have low blood sugar so I have to have a bit
of sugar or I get very ill. Here doesn’t seem to be a bit concern of
doctors..althought it concerns me. I’m also told time and time again, Your blood
pressure is great..well had a grandfather suffered with CHF*Congestive heart
failure* and his blood pressure was something we watched intencely…with mine
being 70/40 it tends to concern me as well.
I’m pretty much damed if I do and damned if I don’t. Atkins diet getting alot
of bad press here. ALOT of bad press. was a documentray on BBC1 the other nite
were actual doctors went on the diet for 4 months.
1 male doctor stuck to the diet..and became so ill, he got a blocked bowel.
Another lady went on it and said she’d never do it again. How can fruit and veg
be bad for you…I do not know what the answers are..
I just know I’m fed up with trying diets..really honestly giving it my all.
Exercising at the gym 5 days a week..and not even losing an ounce. Give me the
surgery all ready and help my health get better..is what I’m going to say to
both the doctor and the shrink..Tired and frustrated.
Mrs. Cyndamarie Gunn

Not sure about other but I have NEVER been able to loose weight on
Slimfast…Lots of calories and carbs
September 21st, 2006 at 2:05 pm
Oh, I meant check the cans to see the carb and sugar count. If you have, as
many of us do, a disturbed sugar metabolism, or hyperinsulinimia (I’m
misspelling that), a tendency to overreact with insulin, and have high insulin
in the blood, lots of carbs and sugars will make you hungrier. Insulin makes
you hungrier. All that insulin in the blood can also affect your blood sugars.
You don’t have to do the "Atkins" diet - but the tenets of the diet are good
and healthy. Focus on proteins and veges (non-starch) - stay away from sugars.
Limit your fruits to berries, like strawberries and blueberries. The only
people here doing bad press are a pro-vegetarian, animal-rights group who have
managed to get some time in CBS. We had the anti stuff for 30 years before
someone actually did the tests and it’s been fairly highly tested recently.
As a diet, when it’s not as successful, it’s because people have added back in
the carbs. I’ve watched my brother do Atkins, and then go out and have breads
and deserts. Doesn’t work <LOL>.
I seriously doubt that the blocked bowel was caused by the diet - we have
people with bowel blockages all over the place in the US, who are not on the
Atkins diet. You’re more likely to have a bowel blockage from a twisted
bowel. How does that happen because you’ve eaten meat? Also, you have to
drink plenty of water. I’m willing to bet he wasn’t drinking sufficient water,
too boot. Not enough water and you become dehydrated - which is not good for
anyone.
Usually blood pressure responds well to salt, more than sugar, in my experience.
I can understand your frustration. Dieting doesn’t work, and I’m here to prove
it. But, I have to say, Cinda, the surgery is only a tool. It won’t do all
your work for you. It will make your life a lot easier, but it is still only a
tool.
Any chances at all you could come over to the states for the surgery? I know
you’d probably have to mortgage the house to do it <sigh>. Mine wasn’t paid by
insurance, either.
Pam

This is gonna sound real pathetic..but here surgery is covered on NHS..semi free
health care..In states..I have no health insurance since living in the UK..and
no way could I afford the surgery.
I know it is a tool….I’m willing to use…but I cannot do this alone.
I’ve done diets, I’ve exercised like mad for the last 3 years..and got no
where.I walk 2 miles a day…or try to…I drink loads of water..and I lose
nothing…so…what is one to do??
I’m not sure….I’ve done my best…and still weigh a woping 280 pounds.

seems that they are really stingy about actually doing the surgery!
I hope the best for you.

Well, I wish you all the luck in the world. Truly. It does sound
like this will break your plateau.

i wanted to do gbs but am not "overweight" enough from insurances
perspective…i don’t have problems keeping the weight off just
losing it. I had already lost 87 pounds since i had my daughter,
but then i got stuck

get them unwired, other than the fact that you will start gaining

If you sit down now and think back, maybe you can recreate your
meals, Cynda. Just write down what you can remember. The
psychologist visit here in the states is usually pretty painless

I can’t speak to what your particular doc will do. Here in the US,
the psych eval runs from an hour of conversation to doing some
testing. I had to do a depression inventory, which was maybe 30
questions. The MMPI is around 450 questions. I’ve never heard of a
physical involved with a psyc eval.

I have to share my JOY with you all, my insurnace called the surgeon
this morning and said they needed some additional blood work to prove
my being overweight isn’t a thyroid thing for the past 25 years -
which I have had it tested and know it isn’t. But the insurance lady
said that if the test came back a non thyroid thing then she sees no
reason not to apporve me!!! PTL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Went in this
afternoon and did the blood work and the insurance should have it by
thursday afternoon. This is going so much faster than what I
thought it would. It has only been 1 working day since they received
the papers. ANd i could be approved by this friday possibly!!!!!

Hello All!
I had my surgery on 6/11/04. Everything about the recovery has been more and
less than I expected. I have had very little pain , and alot more energy. At my
3 week appt. with surgeon , I had lost 30 pounds from my high of 314. I couldn’t
have been more excited. Since week 2, I have been power walking for 30 to 40
minutes every morning. My size 28’s are a thing of the past! My concern now is
that I have seemed to stop losing . I know that plateaus are normal but are
they normal, this early? My other problem has been severe constipation. I try
to drink at least 60 oz. of water everyday and my doc has me on stool softener ,
I take 2 a day. and I still have terrible problems when it comes to elimination.
Has anyone else suffered this way? If so , what has helped? I am truly
enjoying feeling less weight and the new roundness to my booty! My husband is
too! I am very glad that I’ve done this. I just wish I had sooner.

Hi, Linita! Welcome to the world of post surgery. I had problems with
constipation big time. They all evened out when I started taking magnesium. I
have Magnesium capsules with a mix of oxide, citrate and one other form..
can’t remember at work. They say that oxide is not the best for us, that
citrate is better. I take 2 of the 500 mgs a day. haven’t had a problem since
I started them.

I did the same thing you did. Great the first month and then very little
loss the next month. After a few weeks it has even out and is right on
target. And constipation so bad I thought I would have to go to the hospital
and have help. After about a month, and drinking lots of water, and doing
my daily exercise, and getting a more comprehensive vitamin stuppliment it
stopped. I have not had a problem in 4 months. Another friend of mine
said she was having constipation and it got better with more water intake
and better vitamine supplements.
It will get better.
