New to group & researching surgery

Hello Everyone!

I am new to this group and have spent quite a few hours reading your
messages on the several different topics that are there and I have to say I
had some of questions answered, but I am still seeking the answers to a lot
more questions; such as:
1. Do you have to meet a certain criteria to have Bariatic Surgery?
2. Do you have to have a eating disorder only to be considered for this
surgery?
3. If you don’t have an eating disorder, will this surgery still work for me?
4. What kinds of foods are you allowed and not allowed to eat post op?
5. What is the average weight loss post op?
6. How long does it take to heal from surgery?
7. I’ve read somewhere there is an adjustable band they can use , is this
true and how does an adjustable band work?

8. Is there an age limit to this surgery?
9. What is dumping?
10. Does anyone teach you how to change your eating habits before surgery?

I can go on, but those are just some of the questions I have. If anyone
who has had the surgery and can shed some light as to how their experience
was, and how you are doing now…I would love to hear from you.

Signed,
Jennifer M.

    Hi Jennifer,

I don’t have all of the answers, I am still pre-op, but I have done a ton of
research…..here is a great site if you haven’t been yet -
    www.obesityhelp.com.

Here are a few answers I got from my doctor and insurance company:

    1) Criteria - Most Insurance companies criteria is @ least a BMI of 40, 100
lbs over your ideal body weight (some require twice the ideal body weight)
plus other medical reasons (high blood pressure, heart disease etc.).

    2) NO

    3) Yes

    4) Sugar (however some people say after a while, they can handle sugar in
    small amounts), Nuts and Coconut

    5) Total weight loss should be 1/3 of your pre-op weight.

    Hope some of this helps.
    Sharon
