My surgery is the day before yours. I think it is normal to worry. I am
scared too. I know the odds are in my favor. We will be fine. Let’s keep
in touch as we are doing this within a day of eachother. Good Luck. Rebecca

Desperate in CA

Thursday, November 25th, 2004

Hi, I can answer some of your questions. I still have alot of my own.

The National Institute of Health’s guidelines are a BMI of 35 with
co-morbidity, and BMI of 40 without. You can establish your BMI at
obesityhelp.com. Each insurance company has their own guidelines, but NIH
guidelines are helpful knowledge when appealing insurance declinations.

Just a Note, BPD/DS 12 days post op

Wednesday, November 24th, 2004

Hi I don’t hang here often as I mostly am on DS_ Ohio group. I had
the BPD/DS procedure by Dr Hess office, Dr Oakley. I am feeling
pretty good up and around Ok as long as I don’t strain or lift
anything more than 5 lbs. I have lost aprox 22 lbs already, am not
having nausea, or stinky stools, my breathe although not terrible has
a funny taste in my mouth all the time, . Hope everyone is doing
well no matter what your surgery choice it is good to have options
and be able to pick what is right for us as individuals, Saw the
notes about Oprah and one thing to say anyone who watches see she
although she works at it still fluctuates in her weight often up and
down, so she has not won the war, just the battle, and her opinion is
uneducated in book and means nothing to me, even though I respect her
as a person she is not a god or anything like that just another human
being. Lots of Luck to those of you with surgerys coming up, just
take 1 day at a time and know you will get through it I can atttest

Hi from a newbie

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2004

Hi,
My name is Dee & I’m from Louisiana.
I am having the by pass surgery on the 30th of April & I am scared to death.
I have lost 25 lbs for the surg. My Dr is doing it by laproscope.
He has done many this way & even those with a BMI of 80!
My BMI right now is 70 & I wanted it to be less than 70 for the surg.
I have 8 days to lose that 1 BMI. He says he is not worried at all & wants me
to stop being so concerned about this.
My daughter keeps telling me, "Mom. just think…..Apr. 30th will be the
last day that you will be fat, forever. May 1 will start a whole new life for
you."
She is the only one that knows I’m having this surg. & we have gone to all
of the seminars & I have been preparing my self ‘mentally’ for this since
Oct. My friend had hers done in Oct. & has lost 102lbs since then.
My advice to most of us who is contemplating this procedure is not to let

New to group & researching surgery

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2004

Hello Everyone!

I am new to this group and have spent quite a few hours reading your
messages on the several different topics that are there and I have to say I
had some of questions answered, but I am still seeking the answers to a lot
more questions; such as:
1. Do you have to meet a certain criteria to have Bariatic Surgery?
2. Do you have to have a eating disorder only to be considered for this
surgery?
3. If you don’t have an eating disorder, will this surgery still work for me?
4. What kinds of foods are you allowed and not allowed to eat post op?
5. What is the average weight loss post op?
6. How long does it take to heal from surgery?
7. I’ve read somewhere there is an adjustable band they can use , is this
true and how does an adjustable band work?

Wt. loss before surgery

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

Rebecca,
I don’t know how my surgeon arrives at his magic number but I am
really glad that he requires you to,lose some weight. He says that
the weight loss makes the procedure easier for him to do, allows him
to make a smaller incision and reduces complications for the patient.
He generally requires patients to lose 10% of their body weight but
heavier people have to lose more. He does the open RNY with a band
around the bottom of the pouch to keep it from stretching out. Anyway
it only requires a 23 hour hospital stay and in 20 years of doing this
surgery he has never lost a patient. He did 141 procedures last year,
so I can’t argue with success. Anyway I have to lose so much because I
am really heavy. I was 508 when I went for my consult. I was 463
last Monday. My BMI is 80+. I am not proud of this but it is true.
He was very suprised when I went for my consult that I was still able
to work and do what little I was doing.

Family

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

Robin,
Hang tough girl. The family can be a real downer. My family really
hasn’t had too much to say about it but I know from folks in our
local support group how mean and awful yhey can be especially about
this. I am sure their comments are motivated by love for you and fear
of you having a major surgical procedure. About all you can do is
do the research on the net and with your surgeon and present the facts
to them. Maybe you need to let them know just how you feel day to day
living as an overweight person. My family, except for my hubby and
children, have no idea just how debilitated I had become with the
shortness of breath and back problems. My husband and children were
doing almost all the housework and shopping. My surgeon requires you
to lose weight before the surgery. I have to tell you that within days
of going on the preop diet which is pretty barbaric, I started to feel
so much better. My respiratory status is greatly improved. I was

UNREAL

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

I just found out that I’ve been approved by my insurance company! I
can’t believe it, it only took them two days to review my file!!! If
you have the opportunity, I highly recommend Weight for Life, they
did a fabulous job of making sure that I had all of my paperwork in
order.

Now, I just have to make up my mind. Now that its a "real" option,
I’m feeling nervous. I can’t wait to see the surgeon, I have soooo
many questions.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Robin
