My last screening test is tomorrow. I wasn’t going to tell my mother-in-law
about my surgery because she has "talked" to me about my weight in the past.
The way she would do this is by telling stories of people she "knows" who
have had there aprons removed via liposuction and how the family didn’t have
to be embarrassed after the procedure. She also told me that my husband
chose a large woman so he wouldn’t be challenged (She don’t know me very
well, do she).
Any way yesterday I told her " I wasn’t going to tell you this but, I’ve
decided to have a gastric bypass". She exclaimed "Oh! you make me soo happy"
There is some support you can do without.
The rest of my family are frightened but understand the necessity of the
surgery. When I first decided to do this my husband was against it because

Hi y’all,
Although I have had a pretty uneventful recovery, I feel that my
weight loss is to slow. I am 25 days post-op. In the last week, I
have only lost 3-4 lbs. I frequently feel like I am starving.
Nothing seems to hold me very long. I feel like I eat way way too
much.
In addition, the doctor opened my incision for drainage. Now, I will
have to wait for it to heal before getting back into pool-therapy.
My Mom doesn’t think I am getting enough protein. Could she be
right? The dietician said that supplements aren’t necessary at this
time. I am not sure what to do.

Hello, this is Robin again. I’m going through the process of getting
insurance approval for RNY. In the meantime, I spend a part of
everyday doing research on the successes and possible failures of
this procedure. I am also trying to get my family as informed as
possible, taking them to informational seminars and the like. As it
stands, some of them are dead set against it and others of them are
taking a "I guess if you feel it’s necessary, just be safe"
attitude. I realize that they love me and are concerned about my
well-being, but I feel like they aren’t trusting my judgement and/or
they don’t understanding what "Living Fat" is like. I know they will
ultimately support me, it would just be nice for someone to
say, "gee, I think you’re doing the right thing". This decision was
hard enough to make without having to deal with all this emotional
upheaval. Anyone else had a similar experience?
Hi Y’all,
I am doing really well. I have lost 22lbs since March 1st. My energy
level is about a 4 on a 0 to 10 scale. The only thing is my incision.
It is red with some raised areas. This is right above my belly
button. It is tender at times. This seems to be getting bigger. The
doctor said it was an allergic reaction to something they used during
surgery.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do for it? Any
help or advice would be appreciated.

I too am new to the site. I’m 42 years old with 4 kids ranging from 19 years
to 20 mos. I’m a stay at home mom with an Rn license gathering dust these
days. I love gardening, have diabetes, and gastric reflux. I am awaiting a
date for my lap RNY any day now.
I am having the surgery hopefully for a "remission" of my diabetes. I am
looking forward to feeling good again and being more efficient in my garden,
and more active in general.
It’s very exciting for you Maggie, that date is right around the corner.

BHayes, I have not had either surgery yet, but I’ve just read an abstract on
this very topic. If you go to the google search engine, and search free
medline there will be sights for medline sights where you are not required to
be a member. The sights will allow you to search the abstracts (summary of
the article). Then you can order the articles that pertain to you. There is
nothing free about it, you’ll have to pay for the article. In your case I
think this could give you some very good information. These days of HMO’s
and managed care doctors hardly have time to do this sort of research, and
right or wrong, we have to take things in our own hands. No one will take
more interest in this than you. (Sorry, I tend to get preachy)
As I said I saw literature out there regarding this, and if you have any
questions about technical vocabulary, there are a couple of nurses on this
site who could help you if we get out our medical dictionaries. Good Luck,
Rebecca
Hello group, I would like to introduce myself to you all. I am 29
years old and live in Washington State. I am hoping to have RNY
sometime this year. I am still early in the process, but have been so
encouraged by all the great success stories I have heard in various
support groups and websites. I have met with my regular doctor who
referred me to my surgeon. I meet with him on Monday. I suppose I
should be nervous… but am not yet. I am waiting for the battle of
the wills to begin with my insurance because I have a feeling it will
not be approved easily. So mainly… just hello to everyone!
I had the old stapling procedure done in 1992. I lost a lot of
weight, started popping staples and gained it all back. I recently
started having major problems (unable to eat or drink at all). To
make a long story short, I just saw Dr. Eagon in St. Louis. I had
decided to have the bypass taken down completely where I would have
a"normal" stomach.
Dr. Eagon STRONGLY suggested that I have this new procedure done
instead. I will definitely have to have surgery,we just don’t know
what yet. I am trying to decide what to do. The dr. thinks I will
have a large weight gain, if I return to "normal", but I am really
tired of throwing up! I am to see him again at the end of April.
Has anyone out there had my old procedure revised to this new "y"
thing? Has anyone had their procedure taken down completely.

Im 26 years old and my health is getting worse and worse so my DR
suggested that I have the vertical Banded gastroplasty. Im 5"5 and
weight 412 lbs my BMI is 68. My problem is my insurance company has
denied me. We are in the progress of appeals. Does anyone know what
else I can do to get my INS. Company to approve this surgery for me?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
