Nervousness takes over
I have been lurking here for quite some time.
My name is Peggy. My three year process of getting this surgery
comes to an end on July 30.
I know that I really want to do this.
My only concern is that I do not hear anything from people who are
more than 5-6 years out. I saw the post a few days ago calling
for people who are 10-12 years out go by with no responses.
Are there any? I am really worried that the malnutrition and other
complications may shorten my life span.
This surgery (In it’s most primitive form) has been around [what?] 30
years, and yet I have not read or heard from anyone who has been out
5-6 years. The reason I am having this surgery is to prolong my life
and I am so worried that I still won’t be alive in 10 years.
Maybe I am looking in the wrong place for longer post-ops…
Can anyone tell me?

Peggy,
I have a dear friend who had WLS in 1984, which is 15 years ago, and she’s doing
fine. She’s not online, and I don’t know exactly what she had, other than
"stomach stapling". She does still have to do B-12 shots, but I think everyone
on the list knows we’ll have to supplement for the rest of our lives.
Given your current weight and health, what would you be like at 30 years from
now with *no* surgery? That’s the way I would look at it.

Peggy,
I am only 6 weeks post op, but I have 1 friend who is 5 years post op and has
maintained her weight loss and is FINE!!! I have 1 other friend that is
about 7 or 8 years and she lost 160 pounds within 18 months and maintained
that for about 5 years…then she gained 20 pounds over the next few years
and LOOKS and FEELS better, she is fine also.
Hope this helps.

I’m still in the pre op stage soon to have surgery in July but in my opinion
there are enough supplements out today whether by mouth or shot, that mal
nutrition would come from lack of taking them. The odds of s shorter life
span due to obesity far more outweigh the ones of the possibility of
malnutrition. Good luck and I hope your confidence on your decision to have
this surgery will become stronger.
