Hi.
I am a new member and this is my first post. I am 38 years old,
have high blood pressure, have had knee surgery, currently weigh
267, am 5′6" and have a BMI of 43. Over the past 6 years I have
tried Weight Watchers, LA Weight Loss, Xenical and Adkins without
long term success. (I have lost more money than weight) My biggest
problem is I would lose 20 pounds, reach a plateau and would not
continue to lose and after a month or so of this I would give up on
the diet. I am active, I practice martial arts (2nd degree brown
belt in Tae Kwon Do), I try to exercise at least 30 to 60 minutes a
day, 5 days a week, and while I do not follow a perfect diet (if I
want to have a muffin, I have a muffin), I do eat in moderation. I
am now considering a surgical weight loss proceedure and want to
know from the group what their experience was. I am looking into a
laproscopic F&Y proceedure, for which my doctor said I am a good
candidate. I would like to know about exercise afterwards, would I
be able to continue practicing martial arts?

Welcome to the group. Sounds like with all the exercise you already do, you
will do WONDERFUL after the surgery. I think the hardest thing for most
overweight people who have the surgery (who didn’t have much experience with
exercise) is starting exercising. I am 8 weeks out and have lost 45 pounds
….I have yet to start walking (I know that is the best exercise) I have
started doing some exercising in the pool at about 5 weeks. I feel really
good, but a little on the tired side (I know that exercise is supposed to
help with that). I think your surgeon will allow you to start walking
IMMEDIATELY and start working out harder at about 6 weeks….not sure about
the Martial Arts….I guess it really depends on how big your incision is. I
know that they say it takes about 6 months for your new system to be
completely healed.
Good Luck and keep in touch.
