Barbecues & Parties………………

Just wondering if you all still go to barbecues or parties even
though you all have had the surgery?? If so, how does it make you
feel?

As for me, I’ve gone to a couple of parties, barbecues, and other
gatherings. Everyone is eating all the good-tasting foods that they
have to offer. And here I am, with my diet food, etc. No doubt, I
still do have a great time at the gatherings. It just makes me kinda
nervous and embarassing too. It’s just like a non-alcoholic, going
with their
friends to a pub….LOL! To tell you the truth, I’m at the verge of
not going anymore, but then I’m missing out. What do you think I
should do???

Tiff, eating is only a part of the barbeque, visiting is another part,
and a big one. Last month, I went to a party at a friend’s house and
another friend showed up. She was sick with some sort of sore throat
thing (she works with me) and didn’t eat a thing - only drank something.
I didn’t realize it until the next day when I asked if she’d tried
something and she said her throat was too sore to swallow. Hey, it
happens. She had a perfectly good time because she wasn’t focused on
what she couldn’t have, but on what she could. Another thing is that
you can have protein at barbeques… Probably not a lot of sauce,
because of sugar, but hey, the meat will work.
If you want to be with your friends, be there. If you move around from
group to group, no one will know you’re not eating <G>.

    Tiff,

Alcoholics go to party’s that serve drinks. They know that drinking is not
for them. Just like some kinds of food is not for us. I would never miss a
party, barbecue or evening at the races just because other people eat or drink
stuff that I don’t. And that is the proper word the food that we "don’t" eat
and drinks that we "don’t" drink. I can have any thing that I want but unlike
others I will have to pay a price. I will not go through surgery and after all
the extreme effort that is involved with that do disstructive things to myself.
Neither will I hide away and not enjoy life. The best thing that I can do for
myself is to try to change my thinking(and that’s not easy) to a more positive
and healthful way. I hope that shareing my experience can be helpful to you.
Go enjoy the company of others and try to sit at the other end of the room from
the food. People are usually so busy eating and drinking that they don’t notice
what your doing unless you make a big deal about it. Maureen

Tiff, I don’t like going to funtions now cause I am so big and never
have anything to wear. I hope after the surgery I will want to enjoy
life more, not less. It seems like every time something comes along I
am on some kind of diet anyway. lol

    Tiff,

I went to my 1st party at about 3 weeks post op - a Graduation party for my
daughters boyfriend, I took my 1 oz of cheese and a few crackers. It was
really hard looking at all that food. I am 10 weeks this week, on the 4th of
July our neighbors had a party…..that one was pretty easy….I was able to
eat a couple bites of the hash brown casserole and a few shrimp.

Last week was my 1st eating out experience….I guess in time it will all get
    easier.

Thanx so much everyone for your advice and input! It all really
helped a lot! I’ll probably do what most of you all do, just ignore
the food and have a great time socializing and having fun. That’s
what I did at the last gathering I went to.

    I’m 2 1/2 months post-op. I had my surgery on June 7th. The only
thing I’ve tried new so far was drink diet soda (when it’s flat), and
chew sugar-free gum. Along with sticking to my diet. Other than
that, I’m afraid to do anything else, because I sure don’t want to
get the dumping syndrome of course!

Again, thanx so much everyone!! =)
