My referral visit
I am so mad it isn’t funny.I went to see my PCP for a referral to
DR.OTTEMAN for my bypass surgery and I was astound at my PCP
response. He told me that I am making a terrible mistake. He went on
futher to tell me that the surgery consists of them removing cutting
a part of my stomach out and,get this,Throwing it in the garbage.I he
said that he can GUARANTEE,yes GUARANTEE I will have stomach problem
for the rest of my life,when I go through the "change of life"(I’m 30)
my body won’t be able to handle it because my nerves will be so
screwed up from not having all of my stomach,I will always have
diarrhea,gas and will ALWAYS BE SICK. The final kicker in his
analysis was,when I allow this person to cut me open and whack me,the
surgeon won’t do anything else for me because his job is done,I WILL
BE DUMPED ON HIM TO MAY ME AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE. He didn’t
mention any names but he went on to tell me that he has 10 patients
who have had this surgery and are living in misery and I will be next
in the group. He told me that they had their surgery at the
University hospital here in Colorado and I called to get the Doctor(s)
name so I can do some back ground research on them,THE HOSPITAL
DOESN"T DO THIS SURGERY!! Then this crackpot went on to futher insult
me with his recommendation for me to lose weight in place of this
surgery. He told me to do WATER Aerobics!! I politely explained to
him that,I CAN’T SWIM!!! He was more on the religious side of his
rational for this by saying that god gave us everything we need to
live when he created us. I wanted to ask him if that was true,why do
people have diabetes,high blood pressure and other diseases that can
kill them?? He would rather I develope a co-morbidlity so he can make
some money instead of looking at this as a benefit to promoting
good,LIFE LONG-health. I want to report him to the ethics board and
the Colorado medical board for giving false information and having a
nurse who not only gave me her personal opinion(as she put it,"woman
to woman")she was giving medical advice to which is not in her scope
of practice(I am a nursing student-graduate in January)about this.
Any Ideas??? I did get the referral and I hope it will help me get
approval quicker but I still thinks he needs to be reported.

Dear Msysp: (Sorry, I didn’t get your name)
There is nothing the ethics board in any state will do. However, If he told you
not to have heart surgery after a heart surgeon told you its a must, that would
be different. And your Dr. Otteman, evidently has his opinion. A dr. is
allowed to have his opinion. That’s why we pay him big bucks. I will tell you
though, if at anytime, you have any disagreements with a doctor that could
hinder your treatment by him/her, change doctors without hesitation. I do
agree with him in one respect. God did give us what we needed to survive. God
also gave us the knowledge and expects us to use it in order to make rational
decisions. We are a higher life form. God has also blessed us, (WLS people),
with a very sound, life support system as far as starving, fast or famine. I
think God must have thought I was going to get lost in the Mountains for about 9
months because he gave me a very large storage unit. And it needs to be
dumped. As far as your doctors comments about having stomach problems the rest
of my/your life. I have stomach problems and intestional problems now. I have
spastic colon, nervous bowel or whatever you want to call it. It’s all the
same. I can be constipated one minute and five minutes from now, something
doesn’t sit right and I’ll be in the bathroom for the rest of the day. One
thing I know I don’t want to live one day longer than I have to like this. I’m
sick and tired of being fat, being not able to live my life, Not being able to
get around, just to move without pain, discomfort and feeling like a beached
whale. PLEASE NOTE: If your doctor has so much concern about the outcome of
this surgery and he does have 10 patients that are living in hell afterwards;
TELL HIM TO HAVE SOME OF THEM CALL YOU, to give YOU the low down and then let us
know the secrets that he is not telling you. Tell him then, you will make an
informed decision.

I THINK THAT HE NEEDS TO BE REPORTED TO SOMEBODY. gRANTED THIS IS A VERY

I’d wait to report him until after the surgery <G>. Who knows, you may
need him…. Is he doing a letter for you or did he give you the
recommendation on a script? He definitely sounds like someone you might
want to consider replacing. But, hey, docs are human, too, and some are
wonderful, some are idiots, it goes with being human. They have areas
of expertise and other areas where they don’t have expertise. Having
letters after their name does not deify them, or make them omniscient.
<LOL> His other patients might have been operated on by docs with no
decent followup. Or they’ve been non-compliant. Who knows? You can
prove all of it WRONG <G>.

Judiann(pretty name),thank you so much. You are right,I have diet and exercise
to the point insanity. I have done everything and after research and reading all
there is and then some, I have decided on th RNY(I think it will be Lap). I
hopefully won’t need him for anything else(they handle everything for pre-op-all
tests)so I will drop his sorry ass after I get approved.Thanks and Congrats on
your journey to the other side.Two years out,150 lbs lighter? Any complications?

Dear Judy: Juliann is such a pretty name. I’m so glad that you answered this
message. You did such a beautiful job. Much better than I did. I reckon that
I’ll have the very same problem when I go to the PCP appointment in the next
couple of weeks. I haven’t told anyone about my surgery, except my husband. I
will tell my friends "maybe", because I’m sure they will want to know how I have
done it. But, much as they love me, they have not been there when I’ve sweated
my backside off trying to move the lard from my body. I really want to talk to
people about the lap band surgery. It’s down to the lap band or RNY lap. But,
