want info
Hi,
I am new to any kind of group so don’t really know where to start. I recently
have started thinking about surgery and don’t know where to start looking for a
good doctor or how to know if insurance covers etc.
I have heard of 2 different types of surgery that I only know by the initials:
one is BPD and one is R-N-Y. Can you tell me more about either kind. I really
want to get some info because I go to my primary care doctor in the next couple
of months and I want to go with as much info as possible to talk to him about.
I should say that I am about 125 lb. overweight and 50+ years old so I don’t
know if any of that makes a difference. The person that I e-mailed is a friend
of a friend that I have never met. She had the BPD done 4 years ago and lost
100 lb. She feels wonderful and is about my age. She said the only negative
problem she has experienced is lots of gas.
I really appreciate your help.

Neenah,
Welcome to the group. There are several really good websites, that will
answer all your questions.
www.obesityhelp.com
www.wlscenter.com
Go to the research article link on www.wlscenter.com and then click on
Bariatric surgery: A review and it will answer the questions about the
different kinds of surgery.
As for you if your insurance will cover WLS….Call the Customer Service
number. If they state it is an exclusion, ask if it is excluded PERIOD or if
it is excluded UNLESS medically necessary. Or if you have a copy of your
coverage, you can look there, but I would still Customer Service.
Good luck.

Tina,
Not sure how far out you are, I am only 3 months, but that is one of the
things I am worried about. If you have alot of weight to lose, no matter
what you do, you may have hanging skin. Water and exercise are the best !!!
LOTS of people end up having surgery to remove it.
