Well went to my consult with Dr. Hammer yesterday. I had already
been approved for it through Health Alliance. I wasn’t exactly sure
what to expect. Then the shock hit me. He said I should have surgery
within the month. I just have to have my psych. evalutation, my
appt. with the dietician, and with physical therapy and that was it.
Wow that was quick to me. I already have the p.t. appt. They are
supposed to call me Monday with the other two. I am so excited. I
thought it would be another 6-8months of appts. but they said once
you have the approval to see the dr that is basically it. I am so
nervous and excited now I just can’t seem to sit still. If anyone as
advice on the psych. evalutation please let me know. I do not know
what they expect with that one.
    Thanks,

Usually they just want to see if you’ve got a reasonable expectation
from the surgery, and capable of following the doctor’s
instructions. They’ll check for depression and that your meds are
correct. It’s nothing major. Some psycs do the full MMPI, which is
like a 450 question test that asks things like "Do you read
Tooltime magazine" - <G> (I made that up) - easy questions, a lot of
them the same question just asked different ways. Others just do an
interview. Assuming your doc is setting up the appts, you should be
getting one that is familiar with MO people, the surgery and the
    expectations.

Diana, I had my Psych eval this month. It was a breeze. It was a long day,
but I had to fill out a lot of paperwork, then I had to answer 350 questions
on a computer by saying something was not true at all, somewhat true, neutral,
more true than false and true. Then I had to talk to the psych for over an
hr. He basically is looking to see if you are doing the surgery for the right
reasons and have you investigated every aspect of the surgery and what impact
it will have on your life (or your death) and how it will impact your family
and friends and will you be comfortable with it. Mine was done in a military
hospital so it may be different than what people in civilian life go thru. I
passed with flying colors. Went in nervous that I would not pass it. But, was
very honest with the man. Good luck on your psych eval.
