Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Hi everyone, I’m on vancouver island and I just got a referral from
my doctor to a surgeon in victoria but I’m not scheduled to see him
till March of 2004, is this a normal waiting period? And I was also
wondering in average how long does a person wait after seeing the
surgeon to recive surgery, and is there anyway to get in faster? If
anyone has any ideas or can answer my questions please let me
know…thank you….

Laproscopic vs. Open

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Thank you to all that replied to my long and involved question. It was very
helpful to hear your answers. I have my initial consultation on January 30,
as this Doctor is very busy. Before I went to the required support meeting,
I had concluded that open RNY was the way to go. However, he does the
laproscopic surgery almost exclusively. I would be happy to hear various
experiences with either one. Open is allegedly safer, cheaper, but longer
recovery. Laproscopic is a tad bit more risky for leakage, more expensive.
I guess I would tend to go with the procedure that the doctor recommends.

Would welcome any thoughts.

Some basic issues

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

To all,

I am sure that my experience mirrors 95% of everyone on this list, so I
don’t expect a whole lot of variation in the answers I get. But, I do have
a fundamental question that keeps appearing in my heart and mind regarding
the necessity and efficacy of getting the surgery. Like most, if not all, I
have been on a myriad of "programs", some which were more successful than
others: Physicians Weight loss, Optifast, Atkins, Cambridge and others. The
most successful and easiest once on it, was the Atkins program. When I
stuck to it, I found that I was not tempted by bread, sugars, and other carb
"pleasures". I lost 100 lbs. However, once I went off, it was a slippery
slope, and I found myself resisting going back on it in a big way. Toward
the end of the time on the program, I got truly tired of omelets, bacon and
steak. Once I returned to "normal" (carb-laden)food, I appreciated,
relished it more. So far, I have just made statements with no question.

Got a date

Monday, July 25th, 2005

Hi Everyone,

I have been to a few meetings, been researching for quite awhile and
finally have an official date. At first they had me in Jan. on the
6th but I found out that our ins. might be changing so I checked to
see if they had any Dec. appts. left. I had taken care of all my pre-
op testing. I was approved by the insurance on Monday and I just
found out this evening that they could move it to Dec. 20th NEXT
FRIDAY. Talk about moving right along. I have one week to be ready
for Christmas and surgery glad I am almost done. I’ll be home for
Christmas though, there may not be too much cooking going on but I’ll
be home with my kids starting my new life.

Was this "dumping"?

Sunday, July 24th, 2005

I am 3 weeks post-op (RNY) and 3 days ago had severe cramping,
diarrhea, vomiting (although nothing was there to come up), and
tingling along my arms (felt truly awful) shortly after eating some
Special K cereal. Today I had the same thing (only less severe) after
eating some mashed hardboiled egg (NO SUGAR!!!)
Is this "dumping"? The Special K does have some sugar in it. I have a
spastic colon and am wondering if I am dumping or if my colon is
still adjusting from the surgery, or …..? Anyone had this before?
Thanks

"The Room"

Sunday, July 24th, 2005

This is long but please take the time to read it!

17-year-old Brian Moore had only a short time to write something for a class.
The subject was what Heaven was like. "I wowed ‘em," he later told his father.
"It’s the bomb. It’s the best thing I ever wrote." It also was the last.

Brian Moore died May 27, 1997, the day after Memorial Day. He was driving home
from a friend’s house when his car went off Bulen-Pierce Road in Pickaway County
and struck a utility pole. He emerged from the wreck unharmed but stepped on a
downed power line and was electrocuted.

Only two months before, he had handwritten the essay about encountering Jesus in
a file room full of cards detailing every moment of his life. But it was only
after Brian’s death that his parents realized that their son had described his
view of heaven. Brian’s parents framed a copy of Brian’s essay and hung it
