Lap Band Surgery
I am interested in anything anyone has on lap band surgery. I have
done some research online and my head is swimming! I am considering
it, but am a little fearful. It is so great to find a group like
this one!

I really dont knowanything about the gastric banding
…other than my friend had it 3 years ag0 ..didn’t
loose hardly any weight , was sick all the time and
she had a revision on 12-11 and almost lost her life.
the band inbeded into the stomach and a big chunck of
her stomach and the band had also grown to other
organs….she now is being fed thru a tube and is on
antibiotics. i dont know if this is the same type you
are talking about ….she had vgb banding. I myself
had rny gastric bypass on 9-23-02 and have lost 65
lbs. and i feel very good.
i wish ya luck with whatever procedure you choose!!

In my research of WLS I checked into the roux-en-y got lots of information
then I decided I did not want to do something to invasive. I was scared to
have surgery in the first place because of a past experience. I did alot of
research and chickened out a couple of times.
The lap band sounded great but I started reading about all the port problems
(disconnections and turning) I started thinking about having to go for fills
($300) and what if I didn’t have the money at that time that I need that
fill. I also read that someone had actually gone to the Dr. to get her fill
they made her do the x-ray/drink thing but didn’t give her the fill although
she felt she could eat too much. I had an appt with a Dr. in our area that
does the roux en y I had waited 6 months for the appt. I went and when I
asked him what his feelings on it were. He told me that they used to have a
similar procedure and they found after years that tissue grows around it and
it can become entombed in the stomach and create bigger problems. He said
there is just not enough long term data on it for him to feel comfortable
with it. I decided that day I would do the roux en y with that surgeon. For
me I wanted to do it once and be through with it. I had my surgery 2 weeks
ago tomorrow. I had mine done lap I got up an walked hours after surgery
and my Dr. released me the following evening. I have had no problems at
all, I have way more energy and I have lost 13#. Hope this helps with your
research. Whatever you decide I hope you are blessed and have a great
experience.

Hi.I had the lap band surgery for obesity on April 8 and so far have lost 24
lbs. I have absolutely no complaints at all about it. I am looking for a support
group to see how everyone else does on the diet post-surgery. So far I haven’t
had any problems with anything I eat but I am looking for some pointers. My
minimus weight loss goal is 50 lbs. and the max I want to lose is 129 lbs. My
exercise so far is a little walking every day.My pre-surgery weight was 257. I
weighed 2 days after surgery and I had lost 15 lbs right off.The rest has been
slow going. Any suggestions or support is welcome.Susan

Hi,
My name is Donna and I weigh around 268lbs. i have tried every
diet know to man but fail. I have been diagnosed as a compulsive

trying to find out about lap band surgery, particularly in the UK.
Any comments, advice etc. would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Donna,
I applaud ou for realizing you ned help. I myself just had the lap-
band 2 days ago on June 24th. I would highly recommend it if you have
sincerely tried everything. I mself have been fighting for the past 5
1/2 years and have failed at everything. I researched a lot and
finally decided to go for the lap-band. Minimally evasive and after
just 2 days I feel good. I have some pain, but it is not unbearable,
actually less than I expected. You really do have to find the right
surgeon though so be very careful in deciding that fact. You have
come to the right place for support.

HI!
My name is Kim I am thinking about getting this RNY surgery done, if I
go for it ,it will be late fall.
I weight 285 at this time .I work as a nures aide at a hospital on a
med/surg floor, some days I feel like I cant keep up, I also like to go
hiking with the Boy Scouts , and Girl Scouts.
And I have all the health problems that come with being over weight.
I do know if I have this done I know I would be better off in the long run
I’ll be" 39" in September.
I have been over weight my whole life. I dont know any other way.
the Dr. said if Ihave this done Iwont be heathy ,well I’m not now!
I know I need this. I know this is going to be done.
I need to change my life or I am going to die

I think many of us have come to this realization. I’m always amazed at
people who seem to think we took the easy way out. It’s not. It comes after
years of failure, and facing our devils, and even today, the work to do the
program is not easy.
But it comes with a knowledge that we’ve taken responsibility for our lives
and are actively working on achieving health in a way many people who
flounder for years have not done. I think we’re all to be congratulated!

Hello kim!!
What doctor told you that you would not be healthy?? You need a new doctor. I
was banded, which I would recommend over the RNY, just 3 days ago and I feel
fine. Of course there is some pain involved in the surgery process, but it is
nothing compared at the pain of carrying a body twice the size it should be. I
personally know 4 people oher than myself that have had the surgery and NONE
would go back and not have it. You will have a lot of mixed feelings and hear a
lot of different opinions from people when they find out what you are aspiring
to do, but you just have to keep your head up and think about the lon term.

The binding garments are generally worn after reconstructive surgery (or
before it). I don’t know of anyone who’s had to wear a binder from a lap
band. I don’t know how many incisions you’d have, but it can’t be that
many. (I had lap RNY and had 6 small incisions.)

My insurance wouldn’t pay for the lap band. Anthem considers is
experimental. Which was fine by me, I wanted to have RNY or BBP. Since I
preferred to have a local surgeon, I went with RNY.
*grin* After you find your toes again, make sure you get regular pedicures!
They feel like heaven on earth (ok, I like having my feet rubbed…lol!)

I’ve never heard of an insurance company only paying for the Lap band. In my
case, like Michelle, my insurance company would only pay for an open RNY.

Our’s has "just started" paying for this type of surgery. So, I feel I am
blessed to get the permission.
To my knowledge, I will be the third person in our county that has had it
done. I know of 2 other people that went out of the county because they
did not "trust" the doctors here and they had to pay out of their own
pockets.

I am a-grinnin’
Maybe I should try and see . . .but I have already received the approval
and they did turn me down the first time. Well, maybe I had check into it
but something is better than nothing. And surely it will work . .

My surgeon performs lap band. The manager of a local Lane Bryant had it done
by his partner in September.

That’s awesome. I know how excited you must be. It won’t be long now and you
will be on the other side.
