5 years post op
Hi, I am new to this group. I had my gastric bypass surgery 5
years, 2 months ago. I too am having a weight gain problem. I went
from 290 to 175 , now I am back up to 193. I refuse to see 200
again. I wear size 16 , sometimes 18. I hate to exercise and eat
mostly carbs.
I read recently that increasing your protein will help control
those carb cravings. They just go down so easy. I still have
problems with meat, rice, gravies and other high fat foods. Chips
and chocolate go down way to easy. I am going to get some Designer
Protein and start having 1 or 2 shakes a day. 30 grams of protein
per shake should help. I understand the comfort food thing. Mine
isn’t cream soups , its a hot cup of cappuccino in the late
afternoon. Both empty calories. I have to get my eating back in
order before its to late. I go back for my 6 months checkup in
another month and would really like to see the 180’s again.

Ellen, you know the cause of your weight gain, because you’ve mentioned
it in your letter. Exercise and carbs. (are you getting your water in,
too?) I know that many people have found protein to control the carb
cravings. There are protein shakes available for us at
www.vitalady.com, and those are the kind I use. I’m not particularly
fond of it TBH, but it was the first I bought, and I’m bound and
determined to get it down <G>. Make it with about 4 oz of water and ice.
You can add flavorings, too, to make it more palatable. Or maybe a frozen
strawberry or two.

Pam, I tried the chocolate designer protein and it wasn’t to bad.
Couldn’t compare to a milk shake from McDonalds (if my memory serves
me right), I am going to put an effort into using the elliptical
trainer I have in the family room. I would love to start running
but with a bad knee its not worth the pain. Do you know of any high
protein bars that are low in carbs. Most the ones I have seen are
high in carbs and calories. The Atkins bars taste terrible. I also
ordered some french vanilla sugar free syrup , but have yet to use
it. My down fall is fat free french vanilla creamer in my coffee
every morning. It says 25 cal per tablespoon, but I use atleast 3
tablespoons per cup of coffee. And then have 2-3 cups every morning.
I think that is what gets my carbs going. I was hoping I could
substitute the syrup in some way. So you think the Champion National
pure whey is better tasting? Have you had trouble with hair falling
out yet?

Hi, Ellen. Haven’t had any hair problems, but then I’m not 3 months
out, and that usually starts around 3 months out (although I guess
it could start now….) It’s something to look forward to <G>. I
hear it’s a reaction to the anesthesia, but I did a lot of protein
shakes preop to be sure I was protein loaded, hoping to keep from
having it. We’ll see. Since the hair’s supposed to come back around
7 months, I figured it was a small price to pay.
I’ve ordered a set of tapes that I saw suggested on another list,
and will start with that, but at my age, I need weight work, so
I have a feeling I’m going to be off to the gym pretty quick.
I don’t know any good tasting protein bars, I will admit. I’ve managed
the carb solutions bars with coffee on the side, but by themselves
I never did like them much. You’re right, Atkins is nasty (IMHO).
The whey proteins are predigested and so they are better for us,
more bioavailable. I’ve always considered the bars to be more like
"allowable candy" <G> - not sure if the protein is as available for
us. Particularly if we have a surgery that has malabsorption as a
major part, like a distal RNY or a DS.
One thing I’ve found is that Fat Free is usually high in sugar. Since
we do malabsorb fats to a certain extent, I’ve not worried nearly
as much about getting a little fat as I have about getting sugars.
I actually think the Champion Nutrition Pure Whey Stack Chocolate
is more like Chocolate milk than anything else I’ve tasted. But you
know, we all have different tastes.
Good luck.
