Some sobering thoughts
To all,
I am fairly new to the list, and have found it very helpful, though lately a
little sobering. I am one who is heading in the direction of getting the
surgery, but wonder if I just put the effort into Atkins or another low-carb
plan, I could accomplish the same thing. When I have considered the apparent
recurring struggles that some of the recent posters have had, I lose heart
at thinking that I could wind up 5 years down the road facing the same
problems I have now. If all I am going to end up doing is getting back
eventually to where I am now, Why bother? Anyway, I am sure there is a
good reason or reasons, but to think that I would take the radical step of
physically reducing my stomach size, re-routing my intestines, and then
ending up being sabotaged by my psyche, or genes, or whatever, is sobering.
Also, I would like to hear some input on the place and importance of
supplements in your post-op life. If you don’t take your supplements, what
kind of effects are experienced? How much money are you all spending on
supplements. How many pills? Shots? Etc.?
Thanks,
Danny

I’ve spent less than $25 so far on supplements…I bought Flintstones
Multivitamin…(after this bottle, never again, they’re quite nasty, how I
ever liked them as a kid is beyond me).
I had already had some Calcium Citrate tablets at home. But I will be
buying something chewable or liquid because damned the size just kinda gives
me the heebiegeebies (Horse pills here.)
I bought a thing of protein powder and will not be able to use it, it tastes
pretty icky. So I plan on buying something else…perhaps some Isopure
ZeroCarb premixed drinks.
In response to the Adkins diet and not having surgery, I myself am planning
on using the opportunity that having the surgery gives re-educate myself on
how to eat healthily. I’m not going to use this as a cure-all, I want to
learn self-control and good exercise habits (I think I should heal a bit
first before I go kicking ass on the gym floor.) I never had that before.
If you think you can lose weight and keep it off without the aid of the
surgery, then by all means I say do so. But I myself have struggled through
the years as an obese person and I was getting ready to switch over from
being healthy and obese to unhealthy and obese. I refuse to spend years on
any more medicines that I have to. Having surgery will help me not to live
the rest of my life depending on blood pressure medicines. It may help to
give me self-confidence about myself as I lose the weight.
Looking forward to all the tomorrows,
Michelle
