Newbie with a question?
I have just attended my first seminar for the gastric-bypass
surgery. I feel this is finally the answer to my prayers after
having made what feels like thousands of attempts to lose weight over
the last 10 years.
Problem is…my insurance company won’t pay for any of it. According
to the information at this seminar…The surgical team will cost
right at $4500 and the hospital will cost $18-22,000 for the "open"
surgery and even more for the laproscopic surgery. So I am trying to
think of several ways to do this…since I don’t just have that kind
of money lying around! As a matter of fact, I am currently
unemployed, having been layed off last August.
So, my question is….my father suggested I look into having the
surgery outside of the US, since medical costs in other countries
aren’t nearly as high as they are here. Has anyone had their surgery
outside of the US? Does anyone know of a resource I can use to find
out what the cost of having the surgery in another country would be?
Sorry to have rambled on, but I do appreciate any thoughts anyone may
have on this.

Emily,
I’ve heard of many people going out of the US to have surgery. The main
places I’ve heard have been Mexico, Spain, and Brazil. Do you know which
bypass surgery you’d like?
Oh, the prices that I found were around 10,000 for everything but the travel
expenses. I saw some that were less.
I’m sorry that I can’t be of more help. Just keep searching, the resources
are out there.
Good luck and don’t give up!

emily, have you checked into public assistance? I know several people that
had it pay for surgery especially if there are several comorbidities. ie
diabetes, high bp etc out of control. look into it! susan deem
