Support Groups

Does anyone have an up to date list of places, and times of support
groups in Oregon?

    Hello,
Anywhere in the Portland, Beaverton, or Salem area. I live in
Tillamook. I have a list but it seems like the majority of groups on
    the list have been cancelled.
    Thanks,
    Farrah

I am having the surgery in Jan 2004. I am looking for a local
support group to attend. I live in Northern Va. Any suggestions?
    thanks Cathy

I am pre op and looking for a support group close to where I live.
My doctor and his regular group are about a two hour drive from my
home so he suggested I find a group closer to home. Does anyone know
of a support group in the Chino, California area? That would include
parts of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. I know
support is important before and after surgery and I don’t want to
risk not having surgery because I failed to attend group. Thanks to
everyone and good luck in your own efforts.

Becky, I don’t know anything in Northern Idaho, but there are several groups
in the Seattle/Pullyap areas (I know that’s spelled wrong, sorry) – if
either of them would appeal – even for a 1x a month, let me know.

Carol, you might check with the hospitals in the area. As an example, here
in Niceville, we don’t have a group. In Fort Walton Beach there’s a group
affiliated with the hospital, not with a specific doctor.

Support is an interesting thing, in that docs have different protocols for
their programs, and are sometimes a bit leery of their patients attending
another doc’s group. I don’t belong to a “live” group, but am a member of
several online groups – and by the time I’ve read 2-300 messages a day about
WLS and the issues involved from preop to LONG postop, I feel that I’m
    getting the support I need.

Good luck with your journey, both of you. If you have questions, please
don’t hesitate to come to this forum to ask and we’ll share what we’ve
    discovered.

    Hello Pam,

I hope to start my Doctor’s appointments next month know that I will need
suppliments after surgery. Can you reccomend what to order from Vidalady
which include multiple vitamin with iron, zinc and folate, sublingual B12
and calcium? I would also like your likes on the protien drinks.

    Thanx,
    Yvonne

  9. Jamey Lancaster Says:

Yvonne, I will tell you what I take, some I get from Vitalady, some
I get OTC locally. The two things to keep in mind are that I’m a
100cm proximal RNY, and that I have osteoporosis. Anything that is
specific for my osteoporosis, I’ll note: I break my vites up

100 mgs Tender Iron (vitalady) 1st thing in AM w/
    500 mg of chewable C

    1 Hour later
    1 sublingual B12
    1 centrum adult chewable
    1 Vite e dry (vitalady)
    1 magnesium citrate (capsule)
    1 chewable C
    1 ostivone (vitalady - osteoporosis)

    1 triboron (vitalady - osteoporosis)
    1 Stress B with C (vitalady)
1 biotin (for hair loss, I’m using up what I have and probably won’t
supplement extra again until next surgery)
500 mg Osteo Enhance (super calcium) (vitalady)
1 citrical (extra calcium citrate for the osteoporosis)

    9am
500 mg Osteo Enhance (super calcium) (vitalady)
1 citrical (extra calcium citrate for the osteoporosis)

    11am
500 mg Osteo Enhance (super calcium) (vitalady)
1 citrical (extra calcium citrate for the osteoporosis)

    1pm
500 mg Osteo Enhance (super calcium) (vitalady)
1 citrical (extra calcium citrate for the osteoporosis)

    3pm
500 mg Osteo Enhance (super calcium) (vitalady)
1 citrical (extra calcium citrate for the osteoporosis)

    5pm
    1 centrum adult chewable
    1 Vite e dry (vitalady)
    1 chewable C
    1 magnesium citrate (capsule)
    1 Stress B with C (vitalady)
    1 ostivone (vitalady - osteoporosis)
    1 triboron (vitalady - osteoporosis)

That’s it! Now, when I was low on iron, I’d throw in an extra
serving of iron (150mgs) at bedtime, along with a 4th VitC.

The magnesium citrate is better for us than the mag oxide, and I got
it at my health food store - I think you can also find it online.

The centrum adult chewable I get at WalMart, and my Chewable C I get
    at Sam’s Club.

The B12 I had a friend send from Trader John’s - I have another kind
I like, but can’t remember it off the top of my head.

Vitalady also has an UpCal D calcium which is cal citrate and comes
in a container. Occasionally I will throw some of it into my shake.
I like it a lot. We RNYers should all be getting a minimum of 2000
mgs of Calcium citrate a day, to compensate for the malabsorption
that occurs because our duodenum has been bypassed (I’ve got two
files in the files section from a nutrition textbook that shows what
is absorbed where in the body - most calcium and a lot of the
vitamins are primarily absorbed in the duodenum.)

I don’t order a single vitamin, because I use my labs to tell me
what I need. If I’m low on something, I add more. We can’t
absorb "eaten" b-12, needs to be sublingual or via shot, because we
don’t have the intrinsic factor necessary to extract it. I don’t
count the iron or b=12 in my multi, because iron and calcium fight
for the same receptors and calcium wins, so the iron in a multi is
    pretty useless for us.

I keep all the suckers (oops, bottles of vitamins <G>) in a big
easter basket with a flat bottom on the top of a bookshelf, and in
the morning I take it down and fill a 2oz container for the day. I
also have an alarm on my wristwatch that beeps hourly and multibeeps
    at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm.

For protein powders - the best, again, I’ve found at
www.vitalady.com. You can search the web and find them occasionally
a bit less expensive, or better deals on shipping, but she’s one of
us, and has always given freely of her time and expertise without
trying to sell anything else, on the lists I’ve been on that she’s
also on. Since I value her integrity, I’ve purchased from here.
This is not a comment on anyone else, just my feelings about her.
I’m willing to pay a dollar to two more. She also has samples for
sale, and if you want to try something, you can try it for like $2 a
    serving.

    My fave is
1/2 serving of Champion Nutrition Proscore 100 Choc mixed with 1/2
serving of champion Nutrition Pure Whey Stack choc, 1/8 tsp of
cinnamon, 6 oz of water, a couple of cubes of ice and shake in a
container like the Tupperware gravy shaker.

Next favorite is the same two powders half and half with the
cinnamon, but with 1.5 cups of ice, 2 tbsp of non-dairy creamer, 1
pkg of splenda, 3oz of water, and blend until it becomes like a
Frosty. Sometimes I’ll throw in a teaspoon of instant decaf
    expresso.

The next fave is the IDS MultiPro Whey Isolate Cinnamon Vanilla -
it’s an isolate, so it doesn’t fill me as much as the other two, but
it’s good. I mix it with water and ice, or will do the Frosty like
drink. It’s good mixed with the decaf expressso, too.

OK, others that I’ve liked include
The HDT 5+1 Banana Cream Pie
Champion Pure Whey Stack Banana Scream (good but not the best)
Champion Pure Whey Stack Cocoa Mochacinno
Champion Pure Whey Stack Strawberry (good but not the best)
All the Protein Delites except the Alpine Milk Chocolate (I’m
    spoiled with the Champion)
    IDS MultiPro Whey Isolate Cappuccino
Nectar - I liked best the Carribbean Cooler. The Very Berry and
Apple ecstacy and Strawberry Kiwi and Fuzzy Navel were not as good
to me, but I know others who have liked them. They’re worth a
    sample to try.
I liked the SciFit Amino Infusion - they’re clear drinks - but not
    on a regular basis.

All the drinks I start out with a cube or two of ice, 4-6 oz of
water and enough protein to make 30 gms of protein. For MOST
proteins that’s about 100cc of protein powder, or not quite a half
of a cup. (one ounce is 30cc, one cup is 240cc, so 100cc is around
1//3 of a cup). The isolates dont’ take as much.

I’ve been known to mix my powders and to add things in to adjust the
taste. I don’t do milk because the protein is not easily digestible
for us, so all it really adds is milk sugars, and I can get the
richess with the ND creamer, or a TBSP of cream.

Well, this was probably more than you wanted <G>.

Good luck, keep us posted on how it goes, Yvonne.

Vitalady is a great source of protein. I just love the sample
packs. Suppliments can be bought also at walmart. If it is
something you need the rest of your life. Look for cheap and
quality. Before surgery take a multi. Mine is from walmart and is
for weight loss. Also right after surgery, you will need to take 2
chewable (fred and barney) daily for 2-6 weeks (depending on
surgon). I now use vitamist. It sprays in your mouth and is
imediatly in the system. Sometimes fred and barney dont desolve.
You may also want to check with places like GNC or other places for
protein and supplaments. We use a place in Tulsa that gives all the
bypass patients a 10% discount. Take care of yourself and get ready
    for great changes.

BECKY, BECKY, BECKY. One of the things we stress in our support
group is "the better you go in, the better you come out". You need
to booste your matabalizm by starting at least one protein shake a
day, 2 weeks before surgery. Also, start a low carb diet. Carbs
will cause your liver to expand and be floopy. This can cause it to
get in the way of the surgion and could drastically change your
surgery. You also need to start an exercise program to build the
muscles up. Support groups are the most improtant part. Most
surgions have not had the surgery. There are little things we learn
from experience. One of my support members was having trouble 2
weeks out. She would wake up and throw up first thing and not be
able to eat after. The cause was sinus drainage in the night. We
all have it, jsut our bellys are smaller and dont hold as much snot
as before. Seek as much information and meet with as many people as
    you can.
