Simple question
Hello, all. I am in the process of going through all the medical hoops in
order to get approval from insurance, and the doctor to do gastric bypass
laproscopically. Having lost weight on various diets, only to gain it back
with a vengeance, I am hoping that the surgery will finally provide a tool,
aid, and be a physical catalyst to being not only able to lose, but to keep
it off.
I would like those of you, both newbies and veterans, to answer a simple
question. What is it about the surgery that has enabled you to keep off the
weight, as opposed to other programs of weight loss?
I have proved over and over that I can lose weight if I stick to almost any
program, some of which are diametrically opposite of each other. What is it
about getting this surgery that will make it less likely that I will tire of
low-carb eating and gradually gain it back. I think that is my biggest
fear.
Would appreciate any thoughts.

Danny,
With the RNY the weight comes off mechanically. The pouch is small,
the opening into the intestine is small, eat too much and you will
toss your cookies or experience pain, and we malabsorb what goes
in. Over time the body will try to return to "normal" - the pouch
will stretch a bit, the malabsorption will decrease. The goal is
to have set in stone good "habits" you learn during the period that
you are going through the fast weight loss (the first year to 18
months).
You CAN outeat your surgery. It has been done. What you have is
a tool, better than any other tool we have had so far. But if you
graze, eat a lot of sugars, drink with your meals, etc., you will
gain back the weight.
My surgery was just under 22k, and was self-pay, I spent too much
money to screw it up now. You will, of course, have to make the decision
for yourself.
