Hi Sandy - Congrats! I had open RNY on 6/9/2003. The pain was really
minimal. I had a morphine pump that I could administer myself for the
first three days and then liqiuid Percocet that I just took for two
additional days. I only had discomfort when I would first get out of
bed. I’m a big baby and I was worried about pain but it really wasn’t
at all as bad as I thought it would be. In the hospital - I had
surgery in the morning and was sitting up in a chair that night and
took a walk down the hall the next day. I went in on Monday and came
home on Thursday. What are your other concerns - I’m happy to help
however I can. Good luck to you!

Sandy,
I had my surgery on 6/20/03 (5 ½ weeks ago) so it’s still pretty fresh
and the nursing staff was great. I was up taking a
in my mind. Believe me, it’s not as scary as you might think. I spend
the night before writing letters to every single person (individually)
in my family telling them how much I loved them and everything and
bawling like a baby because I was scared. When I got to the hospital the
next day, I didn’t have time to worry or be scared because everything
went really quick. I arrived; filled out what paperwork I needed to, got
a few tests out of the way, went to the surgical waiting room, changed,
got my IV and was whisked into surgery. After that I don’t remember much
until later on that night (my surgery was at 11am and I was out by
11:45). I was really out of it that day and even though I know my family
was there and everything I don’t remember talking to them or what ever.
I got out of bed at about 6pm to visit the bathroom and dropped straight
back to sleep. The next day was better but I was still really tired but
the pain was manageable (my doc ordered Demerol shots every 4-6 hours
and Vioxx every
shower the next afternoon and walking up and down the halls that night.
I went in on Friday and came home Sunday morning. It isn’t that bad of
experience and I would GLADLY do it all over again because in the first
three weeks after my surgery I lost 33 lbs. I go in tomorrow for my
‘official’ weigh-in and I’m still feeling great! I’m walking about 2
miles per day and doing water aerobics for an hour each night. I’ve
never had this much energy or enthusiasm and I look forward to each day
now instead of dreading it.
I hope you do well and if you have any other questions, ask. We’ll all
be glad to help.

Tanya,
I am SO proud of your accomplishments. I was banded on 6/24 and while I had no
problems and had a similar experience. I am not losing the weight. I read that
you are walking and doing water aerobics. Do the water aerobics seem to help? I
used to love the water but had 2 tragic drowning deaths in my life and have not
been in water since (12 years now) I finally went to Noah’s Ark last summer and
went in the wave pool (VERY Leary) and some guy slammed into me and I went under
the water and freaked out. I tried to kick my foot to get back to the surface
and broke my foot and sprained my ankle. Now I have more anxiety torwards water,
but I would really love to get into water aerobics. Do you have a pool at home
or belong to a gym?

Theresa,
Thank you for the kind words. I am right now at the point I don’t feel I
deserve them but I’ll accept them graciously (mischievous grin:-)).
I’m so sorry to hear about your problems with water. I completely
understand how scary it can be. I have been fortunate not to experience
the same problems you have but I’m sorry that you have had to go through
all that. I am not fortunate enough to have my own pool but have a
friend who lives in an apartment complex and she allows a friend and me
to use it when we want. Usually it’s about 10pm in the evening and no
one else is there (still not comfortable with anyone seeing my fat butt
in a swim suit! LOL). I will tell you that there are loads of fitness
places that have sports pools (ones that don’t go any deeper than 5 ft.)
and great water aerobics programs. I’m not allowed to join a gym yet but
hope to when I am recovered enough (according to the doctor). The water
aerobics do seem to help some; I’ve noticed that my muscles are being
toned more than just walking. I don’t want to have very much plastic
surgery which is why I started this. My advice to you is if you really
want to try, go to your local YMCA or fitness gym and join beginning
classes. Then maybe on your own try visiting their pool when it’s not
that busy and get yourself used to it.
I really am sorry to hear about your past tragedies.
