Low Sugar and Lap Band Surgery

I have a "few" questions. First does anyone have low sugar and has
had this lap band surgery? I have been approved and it scares me to
death thinking my sugar will drop one day, and I can get it back up
re not able to eat fast enough.

Also does any of you regret it? I am saying to me: I eat to live,
not live to eat. Can you really give up bread and sodas?

The thought of never eating what I want is like can I really do
this? but in the same breath, I am so tired of being fat.
Thanks

You might check out the various surgeries and see if one of the others will
be better for you. I have had an RNY, so I can’t speak to the others. I know
you have greater malabsorption with the DS, but it does allow you more
sugar. The lap band can be a slower weight loss, although it also should
allow you to eat sugars, since you still have the stomach there. It will
limit the amount that you can eat at once.

I find that 8 months after my surgery I can eat anything I really want (some
of which is a nuisance, since I’d really rather NOT be able to eat sugars
<G>), just in smaller amounts. I can eat around that, by drinking as I eat
and grazing, but I certainly can eat breads and sodas if I want.

Unless there’s a complication of some sort (which is not common) we are
ultimately able to eat whatever we want. It’s just a short time in your life
that you will not be able to eat everything you’ve eaten in the past.

Do I regret it? Nope, not for a minute.

I don’t regret ever having the surgery, My life has improved 150 %. I
keep doing things that I never thought I could, or would have even attempted
    to try before.

After I have done something, I find myself realising that WOW, I never
thought I would be able to do this. example go to a restraunt and fit into a
booth or regular chair, I tilled by parents garden this year buy hand,
walking somewere and not lose my breath, I could go on and on.

As for not eating what you want. I can eat anything I want, within
reason. Prior to and since surgery I follow Weight Watchers. And find that
when I either don’t drink the required water or journal I can slip.

My surgery was June 19th 2002, a open RNY, I have lost 167lbs todate. I
have approximately 50 lbs to go. The only thing that really bothers me
right now is that I have a real excess of hanging skin, with two large
hernia’s. I had to go out and get a binder, which has metal stays in the
back and sometimes they dig in. My surgeon does not want to do a panni
    until the new year.

I only had surgery 6 weeks ago so I’m still considered a baby at this
but I do not regret one single second of it. I feel better than I have
ever felt in my life. And now that I’ve gone to my soft foods phase, I
can have bread and have been able to have soda since I came home from
the hospital. Of course, in the 6 weeks I’ve only had about 12 oz of
Diet Vanilla Coke but those 12 oz were WONDERFUL tasting. I try to limit
the intake because I don’t want to make myself sick. And as far as bread
goes, I can have it in small doses without the crust and not toasted. In
fact, yesterday I had 1/4th of a tuna fish sandwich! So see, you don’t
have to give it all up forever! Just for a short time.

Diane, The plastic surgery list was mentioning a compression garment, I
wonder if it would work. You might check it out - if it doesn’t work, all
you’ve lost is time. Got it at WalMart of all places.

    It’s a "Cupid" Brand - RN 19681 - #17127 Style 5298. Comes in white and
black. Very comfortable! Tight but comfortable and cost about $16.00.

Her plastic surgeon approved of it, so it’s a possibility. As the poster
said, the binders were so uncomfortable.

This sounds wonderful. I hope I can do it. Did your doctor tell you that
soda would eat up the lap-band?
I am so ready to lose weight. At this point, I just want to be able to
    see my feet!

  7. Neva Marjory Says:

I am so new at this, so please you all do not get annoyed with my
ignorance. What is a "panni" and why are you wearing a garment?

  8. Maximo Velva Says:

‘panni’ is short for panniculectomy (or some other form of spelling, I was
never good with spelling medical jargon). People get panni’s to remove the
apron of excess belly skin from losing so much weight. (I’m ready to have
one done myself, but I’ll wat for a few more pounds to be lost. *grin*)

  9. Maximo Velva Says:

The garment is a short-term fix for the skin problem. By wearing one the
appearance of the excess skin is greatly diminished.

A lot of people wear binding garments after surgery for support until
    finished healing.

  10. Nadine Rolanda Says:

Thanks. I hope I have to one of these one day.

  11. Nadine Rolanda Says:

Okay, will this be needed with the Lap-Band? I understand that "all" he
makes is 2 little holes and after 2 days I can go home.
I am thinking you are talking about that other surgery? RNY? I sure
need to do some research on all of this.,

The word panni is used as a shortcut to describe both the surgery and the area
involved - and it describes the skin that hangs from our waist down, sometimes
like an apron. When you have plastic surgery, SOME - not all - docs want you
to wear a compression garment to help the outer layers of skin attach more
firmly to the muscles and prevent seromas, which are little pockets of serum
and blood (mostly serum) that can form under the skin.

  13. Jamey Lancaster Says:

I don’t think you need one for a lap band or an rny. I guess there are docs
that might prescribe it to prevent hernias, but it is usually used for
    post-plastic surgery.

  14. Bridgett Tamiko Says:

You can do it! Believe me if I can anyone could!

My surgeon doesn’t perform lap-bands and I don’t know anything about
them. Is that what you’re having? I had a Laparoscopic RNY preformed on
6/20/03 and it was easier than I thought. The diet for the first six
weeks was really hard to follow because it was total liquids but now
that I’ve moved to soft foods I’m doing fine. Boredom was more of a
problem than anything else with food. I really haven’t had any cravings
or what have you. I did go through a ‘mourning period’ where when it was
dinner time or whatever and my husband and children were eating their
steak or fried chicken or what have you I’d just stare at it but I’m
over it now. I have become obsessed with the Food Network though. I love
    that channel.

My insurance will only pay for Lap Band, and the surgeon here - I am in a
small town does only the Lap-band - I sure hope that once I have it that I
am as thrilled as you guys are! I am learning so much here. You guys are
    so supportive and informative.

I’m suddenly addicted to the food channel too! I have a new appreciation for
food - good food, made well. I’m glad I’m not alone.

I went through a mourning period too, and sometimes I miss eating whatever I
want without thinking about it. But, then I just look in the mirror and realize
how much happier I am now that I’ve lost over half the weight I wanted to lose.
Not to mention, I’m rarely hungy anymore - I usually have to remind myself to
eat. A miracle for me, who used to think about food 24-7.

AND, yes, I am willing to give those things up.
