weight loss surgery

Hi everyone,

I happened across this support group while researching weight loss
surgery. I’m going to approach my family doctor about this matter
and any input I can get would be greatly appreciated. I’ve struggled
with my weight my entire life. But now I’m at my highest weight ever
and know I have to do something about it. I’ve tried every diet
imaginable, I would loose a few pounds and gain it back plus. I
became a first time grandmother in April, and my grandson is the
light of my life. I know if I don’t do something about my weight, I
won’t live to see him grow up and this terrifies me.

I have some health issues that I know loosing weight will help. ie:
arthritis(painful knees) and have high blood pressure.

I’m doing a search for weight loss surgeons in the Ottawa area.

Hope to hear from some of you soon.

Welcome to the group! What type of insurance do you have? I know this might
    sound dumb but…where is Ottawa?

Thanks for the info…I will check it out. Have you had the surgery? I’m
still in the waiting phase. I have turned in all of my paperwork, had my psych
eval etc..just waiting for approval and the date.

    Hi Jason,

    Thanks for the welcome!

It doesn’t sound dumb at all *smiles* I should have
given a better discription of where I am. Ottawa is
in Ontario Canada. As for insurance, we have
universal medicine here. I’m not sure if the plan
(OHIP) has to approve the surgery or not. Am hoping
to find someone from Ontario that is either having the
surgery or have had it. I talked to my family dr.
today about it, and she said I need to wait til after
I’m done having some heart tests that are on going
right now and then we will discuss it. It sure wasn’t
the response I thought I would get.

I’m curious about what one has to go through before
the surgery and how things are afterwards. Am looking
forward to more input from everyone.

    Hi Cindy!

Okay, now I know where Ottawa is! I thought that it probably was in Canada but
I was not sure. We don’t get a whole lot of our brothers/sisters from Canada
on this site. As far as finding out if OHIP covers WLS you can call the number
on the back of your code and ask them if medically necessary do you cover
codes: 43846 (gastric bypass/gastric exclusion) and 278.01 (morbid obesity). I
know the codes are universal here in the states and I assume that Canada uses
the same procedure and diagnosis codes that we do. You may also want to check
out www.obesityhelp.com you’ll find lot’s of great info on that site.

    Good luck,
    Jason
