Post op Thyroid Problems
Hi, I’m new here to this group
I’m a 1 1/2 yr post op and have found out I
have hyperthyroid~not from this surgery for those who are worried it’s post op
problem :)~ has anyone else had this happen? What were the affects as far as
weight gain/loss after thyroid treatment? I’ve lost 140lbs and lord knows I
DON"T want it back!!!
Thanks
Cortney

Cortney, welcome to the group. You might also want to join the
group. It’s for people who are a year or more post op, and you’d fit right
in. People who are less than a year can join, they just can’t post until
they’re a year out. It’s because there are a number of issues that come up
the further out we are - and this group focuses more on those issues than on
the ones that happen as we get closer to our surgery.
That said, I haven’t had a hyper-thyroid problem. I’d guess you might LOSE
weight with hyper-thyroid, until they do something that makes it hypo again.
I don’t know what the traditional treatment for this is - but if you’re
still close to your GBS surgeon, you might want to give him/her a call and
ask.

courney hi girl. i am new to this group also. I am having Wls this
month on the 22nd. As for hyperthyroidism.. do you have hyper or
hypo being that you are worried about weight gain?? hyperthyroidism
is when you have an over active thyroid which means you will lose
weight rapidly but to the same effect hyper thyroid is dangerous
also so it needs to be fixed . it is producing too much of the
thyroid hormone needed for your body which means it is poisoning
your body but not tooo worry because they have medication to fix
that and stabilize your tyroid. now if you have hypothyroidism(which
is very common in woman and is something that i have just recently
found out i have) its an underactive thyroid which means your body
isnt producing enough of the hormone for you to have a stable
metabolism and help you lose weight so infact makes it pretty
impossible to lose weight. but i am on synthroid which is a
replacement of the hormone and now my thyroid is stable. if i didnt
take this medication it is also dangerous because underactive
thyroid can block vital organs from getting the supply of oxygen
needed.
i am not sure which you have since you stated you were afraid of not
losing weight and i know sometimes people confuse the two so i just
wanted to let you know about both. if you have any quesitons please
ask me if you need someone to talk to. i am not a doctor and dont
claim to be i did try to be as acurate as possible though:)
