Frannie, I have not tried it, and since this is a group for people who have
had surgery, or who are having surgery, and who are using that particular tool
to manage their weight, you probably won’t find many here who have used it
and/or found it to be a success. If any of us could have lost weight and kept
it off via dieting and diet pills, we wouldn’t be here <G>.

    Good luck on your journey.

I would have to agree with Pam.
If there was a pill out there that worked, this support group wouldn’t be
    needed.
I don’t know about this pill, but more then anything else, cut down on your
    serving portions. Drink water, excursive.

    Good luck

You know, I don’t think things are quite that black and white. I had an RNY
on 11/20/02. I can eat plenty of sugar (unfortunately <G>). Many of us with
a gastric bypass can eat sugars. I take no stomach pills, my doc has not
prescribed them, although I do take a lot of vitamins. I will always be
concerned about what I call the "big 8" - those things that must be
supplemented because they are processed in the duodenum, or because our
shortened digestive system can’t extract amounts necessary to keep me
healthy. I don’t count protein grams because I don’t expect to get protein
from food - I use protein drinks.

We’re all different, even those with RNYs have different surgeries - all
called RNYs. But that said, surgery is not a cakewalk, and we will have to
be conscious of our foods, our minds, and our bodies the rest of our lives,
if we want to be healthy and keep our bodies strong.

I am not sure who posted this last statement because they didnt’ right or sign
there name to their email. What I have to say to you is I hope you never post in
this group again. I feel that your negative talk in this last email made me feel
like dirt. I am overweight and awaiting approval for this surgery. I know that I
tell myself every morning that I am not going to eat unhealthy foods. However
some days my stomach doesn’t feel the same way as my brain does. I hope that
after surgery this will change and my stomach won’t feel the need for the
sugars. I say I hope because if it does then I may eat sugars before I realize
what I have done. I know this is going to be a difficult surgery. I also know
that after 31 years of eating unhealthy that I may eat sugar before I have even
thought about it. I can only hope that if this happens the dumping syndrome will
kick in. Perhaps then my stomach will listen to what my brain is saying. You do
not seem like someone who has suffered obesity or
perhaps you are so bitter from it that it lets you talk so cruely. I hope for
your own sake that you take a hard look at yourself and learn to speak your mind

without sounding like a jerk. Also learn to spell.

healthy. I don’t count protein grams because I don’t expect to get

We’re all different, even those with RNYs have different surgeries -
    all
called RNYs. But that said, surgery is not a cakewalk, and we will
    have
    to
be conscious of our foods, our minds, and our bodies the rest of our
    lives,
if we want to be healthy and keep our bodies strong.

I did read what you wrote. That is why I stated my opinion back at you. It
seems it is you that can’t take criticism. I realized I used the incorrect
grammar on the word right. That was an error for me not proof reading. I was
also stating my opinion to you being a jerk. I never said any of what I said
was a fact. Except that there are times you can take a bite of food just out
of habit and without thinking. That is a fact because I have seen several
people write about how they had to be scoped because they popped some food
in their mouth without thinking and swallowed. That is my only fact in the
previous posting. I still think you are a jerk. I am an adult as I assume
you are also. I was responding to comments you made as is my right. If you
don’t like what I wrote then don’t answer or better yet don’t read them I
don’t care. This is a free country and I have a right to state how I feel

about what someone else has written in this group. That is what makes it a
    group.!

hi you have some nerve telling me to learn to spell. i didnt do a spell
check and if you look at your first line you used the wrong "WRITE"
    example.
    I am always "right".
you do not know how to "write" a letter

didnt’..hmm.. the apostrophy goes between the n and the t.
just for your information does critize what you cant do yourself. i made
mistakes as im sure you did.
second i was stateing my opinion as you are yours. and i thank you for
    your
opinion. that i need to take it.. umm no i dont
just like you dont need to take my opinion.
thirdly if you go eat sugar and not know ti then there is a problem and
    you
need to see someone about that. because everything you do you know about
unless your on drugs or just not with it. so if you do things without
knowing you need to see someone about that. as for being a jerk. i didnt
call you names dont call me names.
    lets act like adults thanks.
and if you dont like what im saying dont respond its that easy:)

I am not sure who posted this last statement because they didnt’ right
    or
sign there name to their email. What I have to say to you is I hope you
never post in this group again. I feel that your negative talk in this
    last
email made me feel like dirt. I am overweight and awaiting approval for
    this
surgery. I know that I tell myself every morning that I am not going to
    eat
unhealthy foods. However some days my stomach doesn’t feel the same way
    as
my brain does. I hope that after surgery this will change and my stomach
won’t feel the need for the sugars. I say I hope because if it does then
    I
may eat sugars before I realize what I have done. I know this is going
    to
    be
a difficult surgery. I also know that after 31 years of eating unhealthy
that I may eat sugar before I have even thought about it. I can only
    hope
that if this happens the dumping syndrome will kick in. Perhaps then my
stomach will listen to what my brain is saying. You do not seem like
    someone
    who has suffered obesity or
perhaps you are so bitter from it that it lets you talk so cruely. I
    hope
for your own sake that you take a hard look at yourself and learn to
    speak
your mind without sounding like a jerk. Also learn to spell.

You know, I don’t think things are quite that black and white. I had
    an
    RNY
on 11/20/02. I can eat plenty of sugar (unfortunately <G>). Many of
    us
    with
a gastric bypass can eat sugars. I take no stomach pills, my doc
    has
    not
prescribed them, although I do take a lot of vitamins. I will always
    be
concerned about what I call the "big 8" - those things that must be
supplemented because they are processed in the duodenum, or because
    our
shortened digestive system can’t extract amounts necessary to keep
    me

    Hi Diana,

Don’t allow this stuff to get to you or turn you off from the support groups.
Most of the people in these groups are extremely supportive. Unfortunately,
there is always someone who will try to project their own issues onto someone
else & will come across in an offensive way. I know that it’s really hard to
do….but I think the best way to handle them is to ignore them & not stoop to
    their level.

You would think that there would be a greater degree of compassion & empathy in
most of us who have have obviously endured some degree of prejudice & judgement
in our pasts due to obesity. Just try to remember that it is THEIR issue & not
yours! And for every person who is rude to you, there are tons of very
    supportive & loving members!

    Take care,

    Michelle in Cranberry

I come to these groups for information & support. Two people can have different
ideas & opinions without being combative. Pam was able to convey her opinion in
    a very respectful & non-offensive manner….it’s a shame that not everyone in
these groups are able to do the same.

keep the posts upbeat, positive and non-aggressive in nature. It upsets me to
see grown people act this way in a support group type setting.. if it continues
I will seek my comfort and knowledge elsewhere where they have compassion, and

I appologize to all for the exchange that occurred. I hope we can now

hope no one was too upset by the exchange today, and hope that you can all
forgive us when one of those get through.

  21. Jamey Lancaster Says:

Elaine, Elaine, why do you seem so angry? <G> I was just posting that things
are not as black and white as I read in your post. That some people can eat
sugars (not whether they SHOULD - that’s an entirely different matter!) and
that those things don’t necessarily make them vomit. Not all people dump.

All doctors have different plans. Almost all the plans I’ve heard of say
protein first, then vege carbs, then starch carbs - and even an occasional
piece of fruit is allowed. Different docs send patients home from the
hospital eating different things. Some people seem to have a 6 month window of
opportunity, some people have an 18 month - 2 year window. I’ve seen so many
different plans espoused by so many different docs (as reported by their
patients) that I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s no one perfect plan.
There’s just the plan that works for you.

The amount of protein you "should" get depends on the type of surgery you

have. The amount of protein available from the food that you eat differs
depending on the type of surgery you have. As an example, if you’re a distal
RNY patient, you need much, much more protein that you’ve mentioned. Your
numbers are for adequate for proximal patients.

Hang out, there may be things here for you to learn. Offer to share from your
experience. Let us know what it’s like for you at 6 months, a year, 2 years
out, and we’ll let you know what it’s like for us at those same dates.

We are here to support each other. We are here to share our experiences, in a
supportive fashion. But mostly we are here to support each other.

  22. Jamey Lancaster Says:

Diana, since sugars are in so many of our prepared foods, it’s always possible
to get more than you should, accidently, particularly when you eat out. We
just need to be aware, and when we’ve made a mistake, go from there and do
differently the next time. I know I prayed that I would have the tendency to
dump. Didn’t happen this surgery. Oh, well. <G> I would have liked blonde hair
    as a teen, too. <G>

The best thing about this surgery for me was finding that I wasn’t hungry all
the time. I did have to face head hunger. That happens. I do have to face the
tendency to want to eat if I’m anxious (now). But the first 6 months, I didn’t
even have to face that. Now, at least, I have some choices <G>. I think
that’s the best part of this surgery is that it is a tool. It’s scary because
for so long we’ve felt out of control (at least I did) and it was hard to
trust that I could ever be back in control. I’m much more in control now than
    I ever was pre-surgery.

Let’s face it, we all have a disease - obesity - it’s as much a physiological
process as it is an emotional one. I do think that at some point, they’ll
discover more and more that there are genetics at play - not the genetics of
like parent like child, but the genetics of missing a gene here that causes us
to feel saiety, or another gene there got a bit cattywhompus and no longer
functions the way it’s supposed to.

    Take care,
    Pam in Niceville

  23. Jamey Lancaster Says:

Erin, believe it or not, we moderators cannot be on the list every minute. <G>
As Jason said, this board is only loosely moderated - I basically check to
see that a person who is posting is actually not a spammer or porn. I see now
that I probably should have left this person on moderation a bit longer.

Jason and I have both been working on this - I just came back on at the end of
my workday . Jason has stopped some of the emails, and the person who was
causing most of the problems has gone off list.

I think we can get back to our regularly scheduled messages. I’m sorry if
anyone has been upset, and will get tougher sooner next time!!! So, the drill
    sargent cap is ON!

I think it also depends on the type of job you have. I work a "desk job" and
went back to work after 3 weeks. During my first two weeks back I was very
tired by the end of the day, but for me it was better to get out of the house,
otherwise I may have found myself in a bit of a "rut" just laying around the
house all day. As always, all of this depends on the individual.
