dystymic disorder

Question for everyone out there. I was feeling some anxiety about
the kids and their behavior lately so I made and appt. with a
therapist to see if there was some medicine I could be prescribed or
anything and she had me do this questionaire. I answered it very
truthfully and today she told me that I have dysthymic disorder,
which is a form of depression that lasts for years. She showed me
the list of items and I had most of them on the list. My question is
do you think that the insurance company would deny my surgery if
this came to light?

I’m no expert, but, I doubt that would impact their decision. In fact, I’ll bet
you’d find that most prospective WLS patients have had some form of depression.
I had my surgery in March of this year and was being treated for depression for
several years up to that point - I still see a counselor to this day. I’ve
heard several stories (from my surgeon) of people who found that many of their
depression problems started to go away as the weight came off after surgery.
HOWEVER, WLS isn’t a miracle cure for depression, especially if the depression
is a result of a chemical imbalance or other non-weight related issues. So, in
my experience, depression had no bearing on the Insurance Co. covering my
surgery. I’d be interested to hear anyone else’s experience.
