vitamin toxicity
Hi all.. Has anyone heard of getting toxic from vitamins? Have a friend who had
lap roux-n-y about 3 months ago. She is doing ok except now she has elevated
liver enzymes and thought maybe it was from vitamin toxicity. She was taking 4
childrens multivits daily. I thought that might be too much . I am 4 months
out and only take one chewable multivit. Curious to see if anyone else has
experienced elevated liver enzymes post op. There was no liver problems preop.
thanks for your help.

Elevated liver enzymes are very common among post ops and are
frequently caused by such things as closeness to an injection or
even the trauma of surgery. I’ve never heard of it being caused by
vitamin toxicity. I take 2 chewable centrum multi vites a day, plus
LOTS of A, D, E, and C (All my A,D, and E are in dry form, since we
tend to malabsorb oils) and calcium and have not had liver
toxicity. I have many friends on even higher ranges of vitamins
than I’m on (I’m a proximal) No, I don’t think it’s the vitamins.
Remember, we malabsorb so we’re not getting the full range of what
we take in vitamin pills. I think it’s probably other things.
Usually liver enzymes settle down between one testing and the next.

I am 15 months post op. Lost 188 lb. I take a multi, a calcium (1000 mg b/c I
am lactose intolerant now) and a B-12. Told this to dr. Said if it works for
you go ahead. Since surgery, I have only been sick (i.e., cold/flu type
illness) 1 time. Before I was always sick from Nov. to May! I never took
vitamins
either. As long as its not harming go ahead. Be sure to check w/ dr. Blood
test can be done to tell you. Goodluck SUSAN

Hi Joy!
Yes, you can get toxic from some vitamins. But, is she is taking vitamins with
iron, I would suspect iron toxicity. This is a serious problem. Tell her to
take reg vites w/o iron if she feels the need to take so many per day. debi

Please, before we tell people to stop taking vitamins or stop taking iron, all
of which may be very necessary given their age, medical status, bypass,, etc,
I think it’s important for people to consult with their physicians and look at
their labs. Decisions should be made from the individual’s labs.
Someone’s liver enzymes can be out of whack for any number of reasons, some of
which literally self-correct. About 70% of people will have whacky liver
enzymes in the first 9 months after their surgeries. It’s best to have it
checked out. Frequently it’s just that ole fatty liver that we had as morbidly
obese people acting out as we lose the weight.
