Experiences with friends and family…
Hello, I am new to this list. I have been asked to talk at our local
support group about how to handle any problems or concerns that may
come up with friends and family members after getting the surgery.
Specifically, how does someone deal with people who may not like the
new person they become? I am interested in any experiences others
may have had in this area and how they dealt with these concerns.
While I think this might be a great topic for the whole list, feel
free to email me directly.
Thanks, Jeff

I’ve often heard that if the marriage was strong going into the
surgery, it only strengthens it coming out. If the marriage was in
trouble before, the chances are good that it will exacerbate the
problems. My cats have never objected, they loved me fat (cupboard
love, I’m sure) and they love me thin. <grin> My friends - even
the ones who were concerned for me and assured me I didn’t need the
surgery - are pretty much happier for me now. I’m fortunate not to
have friends who are threatened by my weight-loss, and my family is
ecstatic.

Jeff, I think that if they don’t like the "new me", then I don’t need them.
This WLS is for me and my health, not to impress others.
