Decided on gastric vs the lapband-things looking up
Found out about a really good Dr close to where I live-doesn’t do
lapband and is Chief of surgery at excellent hospital and among
other types of surgeries has done 1000’s of gastric bypasses. My
hubby is changing jobs in July and his insurance choices are either
blue cross ppo or oxford-Dr is under both. Called up Oxford and
sounds like there won’t be a problem if I meet criteria which
unfortunately I do. Anyone heard Oxford not difficult with
authorization for this procedure? I read that they seem to think
it’s good preventive medicine-Must say their premiums are high but
well worth it. I spoke to someone in office about my hernia which is
pretty bad and has affected swallowing to some degree-didn’t realize
it could do that-Dr will take care of this too-Have an appt to meet
surgeon early July-can’t wait to get going on this.

Sounds like you’re in good shape, Andrea. I’m glad they’ll repair
the hernia at the same time they do the RNY - I have to tell you
that Blue Cross in Florida is going to refuse to cover all gastric
bypasses soon (maybe even already has) - they don’t like paying for
the bloodwork and problems that can occur. I personally think that
it’s just more prejudice against obesity, but I don’t have any
control in this issue. I was a self-pay because in 2002, they’d
made their rules so tight, and their customer service people so
vague that I finally gave up and just paid for mine. Let’s hope they
can get you in for your surgery in a fairly timely manner. Waits
seem to be getting longer. But the hernia might help there. Good
luck!
