Decided on gastric vs the lapband-things looking up

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Found out about a really good Dr close to where I live-doesn’t do
lapband and is Chief of surgery at excellent hospital and among
other types of surgeries has done 1000’s of gastric bypasses. My
hubby is changing jobs in July and his insurance choices are either
blue cross ppo or oxford-Dr is under both. Called up Oxford and
sounds like there won’t be a problem if I meet criteria which
unfortunately I do. Anyone heard Oxford not difficult with
authorization for this procedure? I read that they seem to think
it’s good preventive medicine-Must say their premiums are high but
well worth it. I spoke to someone in office about my hernia which is
pretty bad and has affected swallowing to some degree-didn’t realize
it could do that-Dr will take care of this too-Have an appt to meet
surgeon early July-can’t wait to get going on this.

Hello.

I am here with a question.

How can I be supportive of a loved one who has had GBS and is
dealing with the weight loss and lifestyle changes (the diet and
exercising)? How can I be supportive? I don’t want my loved one to
feel like they can’t express themselves. But they seem to either talk
non-stop about their surgery, or they don’t want to talk about
anything at all.

Is this how it is for people that have had the surgery? Or is there
something else going on with my loved one? And how do I get them to
express it? When I try to ask questions, I get rude looks, rolled
eyes, or mumbled comments. If I didn’t care, I wouldn’t even try to

Weight Gain - HELP!

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

I had my band done early part of this last December. I’ve only been
able to afford 1 fill so far (because it’s $500), so I’ve gained
almost the weight back. I’m so disappointed in myself and my husband
is a little mad we spend $10,000 when my weight is almost all the way
back, especially since I begged him for this band & how thin I was
going to be, etc. I guess I just need to talk to someone about it.
I can eat what I could eat before, so I’m sure I need a fill. A
couple things will get stuck if I eat too fast, but after it passes,
I’m still hungry & continue to eat. Even when it gets stuck, there’s
discomfort, but it doesn’t necessarily make me feel "full" sooner
having the band on. Why don’t I have that feeling of fullness
sooner? Technically my stomach has been portioned off to a smaller
pouch…What do you think I should do? Anyone by chance know anyone
around Sacramento, California that does fills? Thanks for any kind
of response.

Question??????????????????????

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Hi,

I do alot of reading on the posts I am just not much if a participator. I do
have a question. I am 61 years of age with a heart condition which is in good
condition now. I had Open Heart in 2001. I am the one who complains of
shortness of breath once in a while. I just had another angio last week to
prepare me for back surgery which was a great success.

Now, my angio showed my arteries to be in still great shape. He says my heart
muscle seems a little weak but other than that everything looks good. I have no
heart damage and have never had a heart attack.

My question is do you I think with my heart history I am too old for the gastric
bypass surgeery?

Lap vs. Gastric Bypass?

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

I know for the most part it is a personal decision meaning the lap vs
the gastric bypass but 2 days ago I had a consultation with a nurse
who is very knowledgable with both procedures. She works with a
bariatric surgeon. She spent an hour going over my history told me I
am a candidate for either surgery. I t seemed to me that she was
pushing me to consider the lap-she sid you lose weight more quickly
with the bypass but it can be a more dangerous procedure-said 1 in
200 die ultimately from the bypass although the surgeon she works
with has never had a loss-just said can be more complications-my
present insurance policy doesn’t cover lap but I may be changing soon
to one that does. Any infor that anyone has as far as differences
advantages or disadvantages would be greatly appreciated. I have over
100 lbs to lose but no more than 120. I’m basically healthy knee
probs and snoring but that’s it age is 48 . (figure the facts can
influence decisions)I also wondered if Docs push lap for some reason-
